Overview
Developed by the studio that brought blockbuster hit franchises Crash Bandicoot™ and Jak & Daxter® to PlayStation fans, Naughty Dog Inc.'s, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is the first game in a new fast-paced action-adventure franchise developed exclusively for the PLAYSTATION3 (PS3) computer entertainment system.

Taking full advantage of the power of PS3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is developed using proprietary technology that promises to impress players with incredibly realistic characters and lifelike environments. Building on its legacy of extraordinary storytelling, Naughty Dog has created an elaborate plot that will have players guessing at every turn.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, brings players into a world ripe with realism and unexpected juxtapositions. A fallible hero akin to those depicted in pulp-adventure genre films, Nathan Drake brings a humanity and believability never seen before in video gaming, enabled entirely through PS3 technology advancements.

Game Features

Using maps and ancient artifacts, uncover clues and unravel mysteries to find a forgotten island and a treasure that was thought to have never existed
Explore exotic locations. Traverse through living jungles and spectacular 400-year-old ruins.
Drake's companions and allies play an important role in the adventure through cooperative mechanics, gun play and exploration.
Experience fast-paced gunplay: use a variety of environmental elements for cover, shoot enemies off of moving vehicles in high speed chases and more.
Use an array of hand-to-hand fighting moves to put your enemy off balance. Anything from wild haymaker punches to running drop-kicks.
Naughty Dog's advanced animation techniques allow Nathan to switch seamlessly between movements and achieve a whole new level of believability in gameplay. Nathan can reload his weapon while dodging bullets and find cover behind a wall, all in one smooth natural motion.
Characters express lifelike emotion using gesture and facial expression through the use of Naughty Dog's proprietary Wrinkle Mapping Facial Animation system.
High-definition range lighting delivers full floating point color calculations yielding an unequaled level of realism and detail.
Hyper realistic water through physics based Wave Simulation paired with cutting edge Refraction/Reflection rendering techniques.
Utilizing next generation rendering techniques such as Bump Mapping, Parallax Mapping, Blend Shaders, Global Illumination, Runtime Shadows and Real Time Shadows, Naughty Dog has created a vibrant living environment.Και μερικά ακόμα (Credits to DarkusS (http://www.ps3forums.gr/VB3/showthread.php?t=90&page=7#139))
They're still optimizing the frame rate, will end up running at constant 30 fps. Sometimes it goes up to 45 fps with all effects on, but they aim at constant 30 fps as already mentioned. Less than 30 fps is considered a bug.
All textures have been drawn, there are no scanned textures. That's why it looks somewhat cartoony.
Jetski level has 6 million polygons + water reflection + refraction + bump mapping + jitter + shadows + a good number of characters + physics + AI + volumetric explosions + etc
It should take 12 hours to complete.
The AI will learn your behavior and react accordingly. Experienced gamers will have a hard time. They're proud of the AI.
There are no scripted events when you fight with the AI. You'll never see the same situation twice (to some extent, of course).
No auto-aim.
The effects still aren't final. They'll improve close to the very end of the project for optimization's sake.
There's a lot of stuff we haven't seen yet. It's like a movie where a lot of things happen, and it will have lots of varied action: shooting, fighting, platforming, puzzles, enigmas, races, treasure hunting ("you'll be finding things"), etc.
Real time HDR lighting: if there's a sunset, everything on screen will have a reddish tone. Everything will be real time.
720p allows better geometry. We might not see anything better than Uncharted geometry-wise at 1080p.
PS3 devkits let them know all the game stats when they're developing it (duh): GPU load, texture memory, level memory, shadow memory, buffers, how is streaming affected, frame rate, etc.
"I love the AI. The fact that it learns from the player's actions and that it adjusts the difficulty itself is awesomenage. We haven't even exploited half of what the Cell can do. Besides the CPU power, we've got the GPUs (sic) inside the PS3, where you can send some tasks to spare Cell from "digesting" them, so that you get more free CPU time. PS3 still has a lot of untapped power."
They didn't have the time to include a co-op mode and getting the game finished in November. Tons of ideas left out of it, might make it to Uncharted 2. (This is usual in game development)
Nathan Drake has 3000 animations.
Real time cutscenes, no prerendered stuff. It's all real time, in-engine.

Quotes - Aποσπάσματα

I. Τεχνικά θέματα
Its only the beggining! Thanks to the game's blending technology, different animations can be run together to create more lifelike reactions to the goings-on. For instance, if you shoot someone in the hip, he could hold his side while running for cover, or limp away if shot in the leg. The enemies react a little more realistically now as well, taking cover and getting out of fire if you blanket the area with bullets.Of note is that Uncharted will indeed support the DualShock 3 and its rumble functionality. We tried out a prototype version of the controller with the game and the tactical feedback added a lot to the gunfire and overall experience, proof that Sony finally did the right thing by adding it to the Sixaxis' base functionality.ΙΙ.
The scenery in all of these areas looks fantastic, and is both starkly different than the outdoor sections that we'd seen before while also perfectly matching the look and feel of the island. Naughty Dog's art team is at the top of their game here, as is the technical department for getting so many whiz-bang rendering features running so smoothly.III. Achievements
There are a whole slew of different types of unlockables that you'll be able to snag, including behind-the-scenes footage, artwork, additional costumes and even other playable characters (though Nathan will still appear in the cutscenes). You'll also be able to unlock different rendering modes, like a black and white mode, a sepia-toned mode, a next-gen filter (with appropriate super bloom and saturated colors) and even a mode that doesn't utilize textures, allowing you to see how the geometry was put together more easily.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Review από το geekpulp.co.nz (http://www.geekpulp.co.nz/2007/11/04/uncharted-drakes-fortune-review-ps3/)(To πρώτο review είναι εδώ)
The game takes a polished theatrical story telling method and broadens what has been offered in the past with its gameplay. This along with the likes of Heavenly Sword have taken a turn towards a cinematic experience with movie like production qualities and game play to fit. Some games I want to give a score, this is one of them, it promotes gaming as an interactive adventure and an art form, broadening what is possible on a gaming platform. For this alone it deserves acknowledgement, the fact that it controls so well and is very fun just compounds this to make it a great title in gaming history. It has it’s flaws but its ambition and quality features far out weigh the few issues. Naughty Dog has my permission to abstain from making cartoon games in the future to concentrate on cinematic titles such as this. Dust off the PS3 and get ready to jump around.
Preview από το Demo (JoystickRadio) (http://joystickradio.com/article-26-Uncharted-Drakes-Fortune-preview.html)
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is a AAA title for the Playstation 3 as far as I can tell from playing the demo. Graphically Uncharted looks splendid and the details in the environment gives off this exciting atmosphere to roam around and the lighting is perfect, as the sunlight from above shines down through the trees and creates shadows on the ground and as you walk through the water you can see the after effect on Drakes legs. The facial expression on either Drake or Elena gives you a real idea how they feel and above all it’s brings them to life as close as possible. http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/8646/scorete0.png

Review από το IGN: 9.1/10 (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/834/834931p1.html)
Can Naughty Dog live up to more than a year of mouthwatering coverage and placate fans who forked over $600 to see stellar title after stellar title come out on non-PS3 platforms? Yes. Yes, it can. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is the most fun I've had in a videogame this year. There are four difficulties to master, 60 hidden treasures to find and 47 medals to unlock for things such as headshots, treasures found and more. These medals yield points, which can be used to unlock additional costumes, unlimited ammo and more in-game goodies. Here's the thing about Uncharted, the final sum is far greater than the individual parts. Maybe you don't dig the combat or maybe the pop-in gets you down, but the overall package of an endearing story, outstanding score, great performances and fun gameplay should put this title on the top of your holiday wishlist. Say what you will about the PS3, but Uncharted isn't just a standout for Sony -- it's a standout for gaming as a whole.http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7940/scorepc3.png

EuroGamer Review: 9/10 (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=87533&page=1)
Talking of environments, it's hard to think of a single game that's ever included such lush and staggeringly detailed gaming environment. As much as Gears of War provided a stunning next-generation shooter setting, the moody greys and browns made it a harsh, dark, hostile, and monochromatic place to be. In Uncharted, it's not just superior to Gears in terms of out and out detail, but brings a feel-good factor with the sheer level of environmental variety on offer.Sure, Uncharted is full of repetitive combat mechanics, but just like Bungie's acclaimed '30 seconds of fun over and over' approach in Halo, Uncharted's combat is so well honed that there's never a point where you're groaning 'not again' just because you're facing the same sort of character models over and over.In its full 1080p glory, I can safely say most people will be absolutely blown away by the craft that has gone into making the world come alive. The dusty, crumbling ruins, the dense, tropical forests, and even the water effects - they're above and beyond anything committed to a gaming canvas to date. One of the most impressive things about the game is the determined AI routines, showing again that Naughty Dog really isn't messing around with this game. Unlike so many tired, generic action games down the years, you get the impression that the enemies in Uncharted have been designed to properly flush you out from cover.By starting with a great control and camera system, building on that with excellent combat and a wonderful spin on Ico's platform adventuring, and then topping it off with a decent storyline, Naughty Dog has cooked up one of the most relentlessly entertaining, fat-free games to emerge in ages. Topped off with the most stunning use of the PS3's underused technical prowess yet, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is, for my money, the first must-have PlayStation 3 title.
GamePro Review (http://www.gamepro.com/sony/ps3/games/reviews/147948.shtml): 4/5 (Για μένα το χειρότερο review που έχω διαβάσει μέχρι στιγμής)
The game offers up some amazing visuals and the gameplay is perfectly paced. You're always doing something interesting, whether it's investigating ancient ruins, trading bullets with modern-day pirates, or skydiving out of a burning airplane. And even though I never truly bought into the story, I still wanted to help Nathan solve the mystery behind Sir Francis Drake's diary.PROS:
It's by far one of the best looking PS3 games around.
The gameplay has its faults but it still manages to entertain.CONS:
The story is a little cliched.
Platforming sequences are way too easy.http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2970/scorevl4.png

Game Informer Review: 8.75/10 (http://www.gameinformer.com/Games/Review/200712/R07.1114.0939.00825.htm)
Uncharted isn’t destined to be a classic; I don’t think there are enough new ideas here to put it in the genius category. However, this is game that is very sure of its identity and does the things that it set out to do very well. It’s a fun, fast, and memorable thrill ride, and perhaps the closest video games have come yet to approximating the experience of an interactive summer blockbuster.http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/9114/scorevf0.png

Uncharted Afterthoughts (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-98981.aspx)

EGM: So, how much did Gears of War influence Uncharted's development? Evan Wells: Certainly we all played Gears of War (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140408) and liked it. It set a bar visually that we knew we wanted to compete with.... As far as gameplay, I think I've heard them cite the same game that put us on this path: kill.switch. Gears of War obviously took that to another level, and again, that level of polish helped push us.EGM: Drake hardly seems like an everyman hero, given his perfect aim and all these great leaps he does... why was he billed as such?[/B] Amy Hennig: It's funny; everybody uses that term differently. For instance, people call Bruce Willis in Die Hard an everyman hero. EW: The reason we bring it up so often is to point out that we're trying to distinguish ourselves from characters like Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, and Lara Croft, who are these superheroes, these acrobats, and who stick every landing. Nathan Drake is not that, and yet he still manages to be a hero.]

EGM: Elena, on the other hand, is more of a refreshing character -- not all boobs and leather. Was this a conscious attempt to avoid that kind of femme fatale character? AH: Well, she has boobs and she's wearing a leather belt....EGM: [Laughs] You got us there. AH: It was definitely a conscious choice. If Nate's going to be an everyman, we want her to be an everywoman...like a 21st-century version of the classic '30s foil for the hero -- the spunky, cute girl next door. She has her own humor, her own strengths and weaknesses in her personality. So that meant, in her character design, that she has a real person's proportions.EGM: About the puzzles, they wouldn't make much sense without Drake's diary in terms of figuring out what you have to do, but that diary pretty much spells out exactly what you need to do. Were the puzzles intentionally made this straightforward? AH: We focus-tested this game... and it came back that people either marked the puzzling just right or a little too hard. EW: Some of those puzzles were ratcheted up a notch or two [earlier in the game's development], and we had to back them off because they became brick walls and players would become stuck. AH: I'm almost wondering as an older gamer that maybe the current crop of gamers [have different tastes]? We were concerned going into the focus tests that we needed to make more difficult puzzles. And the opposite information came back consistently.EGM: The final boss battle at the end of the game is a little bit lame. Did you ever have plans for a different finale? EW: Nothing dramatically different. We created this island and this world, so we had to come up with a boss battle that fit within those confines. If we had a few more weeks, we probably would have made the setup a little more elaborate, but it was still pretty much the direction we were headed. AH: [With] a lot of games, you get this jumping-the-shark problem at the end because you've got to be ramping up to something. Because movies are more about the narrative and the emotional experience, they get away with less. Whereas with games, it's almost like we have to shift our thinking away from boss battles to peaks of the experience.EGM: In the end, do you feel you captured what you were going for? AH: It's doing what we wanted it to do. So many games are cynical and dark and gritty; we wanted this to feel colorful, optimistic, humorous, and romantic. Those are funny words to use for a videogame, particularly one where you're popping hundreds of guys in the head with bullets, but it's that sense of the romance of adventure that we felt was lacking in so many games these days.http://www.1up.com/media?id=2008519

Why Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is PS3's Gears of War

IGN Sits Down with Uncharted Director to Ask Some Burning Questions (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/848/848991p1.html)

IGN: So, the game was called Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, right? We didn't hear too much about it, must have been a budget title – anyway, what was your reaction to the game's reception? Was it what you expected?

Amy: It's funny, but when you're in the midst of developing a project (especially a really demanding game like Uncharted), you tend to lose your objectivity. Sometimes it feels like it's never going to come together, and every little cut and compromise feels like a terrible blow. You really don't know until towards the end of the development, when the fog begins to clear and you start to see all the elements coalesce, whether you've pulled it off or not.

So I think we realized right at the end there that we'd actually made something pretty good – but we were still surprised at just how well the game was received by reviewers and gamers. We were too close to it to have any real objectivity. And you know, a lot of the games out there these days are dark, cynical and gritty, or kind of serious and melodramatic. We just wanted to make a game that was fun and colorful and didn't take itself too seriously (just like the old pulp adventures) – but we didn't know how our audience would respond. So it's been really gratifying to see how people have embraced the game.

IGN: Now that we're a few months removed from the release and Uncharted's raked in a number of awards – it's all over the IGN PS3 award page and even became IGN's best overall action game of 2007 – what sticks out to you when you look back at the project?

Amy: Thanks for all the recognition – the team's really proud of the game, so it means a lot to everyone. When I look back at the project, what stands out the most is simply that we made the game we set out to make. That might sound obvious, but it's not as easy as it sounds! So many things can go wrong over the course of the development, it's not uncommon for the final product to be far different (and far less) than you'd originally imagined.

With Uncharted, despite any troubles and tribulations we went through, the spine of the thing always remained unchanged. Our high concept from the very beginning was to capture the two-fisted action/adventure vibe of the classic pulp genre, but with a contemporary "everyman" hero, and to make a game that truly felt like an interactive adventure movie.

IGN: Any regrets?

Amy: Not really. Of course there are always a few small things that you wish you'd had time to fix, but all in all I'm amazed at how the game turned out, and really proud to have been a part of making it. If I had it to do over, I'd probably like to include a little more problem-solving, and maybe trim a couple of the lengthier gunplay setups – overall, I'd like to strike a better balance between exploration and combat – but I wouldn't do anything to hurt the pacing of the game.

IGN: The big question on everyone's mind is why are there so many exploding barrels on this unexplored island?

Amy: All the old wooden powder kegs were left behind by the original Spanish colonists – c'mon, it makes perfect sense! Why they haven't disintegrated after 400 years, why the powder inside is still combustible and ignites from a single bullet hit, and why the Spaniards stacked them up in such convenient places... it's just one of the mysteries of the island, I guess. But mainly there are so many exploding barrels because it's fun to shoot exploding barrels.

IGN: Seriously, it seems the one common Uncharted criticism around the office is that the combat was a bit repetitive – there's a million pirates and sometimes it can be a bit tedious to shoot each one of them to death. Was this something you guys saw while in development? Is it hard to strike a balance between difficulty and the number of foes?

Amy: It is hard to get the difficulty-balance right for all players (which is why we have the four selectable difficulty levels) – but there are probably a few combat setups where the criticism is warranted. And there are a few places where we could have struck a better balance between "adventuring" (platforming, problem-solving, etc.) and gunplay.

That said, combat is one of the core elements of our gameplay – and we set out to design a combat system that would be simple but deep, with lots of tactical choices for players to discover as they gained more proficiency. Between the different weapons, cover types, hand-to-hand combat moves and gunplay strategies (cover-based shooting, blind-fire, running-and-gunning), the player can approach every combat setup in a lot of different ways. So while I'm sure the combat could be improved by offering even more tactical choices in the playfield, there's actually a lot of depth there for players to explore.

IGN: What made you decide to take the puzzles in such a simplistic direction? It seems any obstacle that pops up in Nathan's way can be solved by glancing at Sir Francis' diary – was that a move to open the game up to more casual gamers?

Amy: As a designer (and a player), I'm a big fan of complex puzzles – but it just didn't feel like the right way to go with Uncharted. We wanted to give the game the pace of an action movie, which means you've got to keep things humming along at a pretty brisk clip. If the player brick-walls on a difficult puzzle for twenty minutes, we lose the tempo.

That being said, I would have liked the puzzles to be a little more challenging... But believe it or not, when we focus-tested the game, we kept getting feedback that the puzzles were too difficult – so we simplified them until players said they were just right. Which turned out to be pretty darn easy. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably make the puzzles slightly harder, and work a little more problem-solving into our platforming and combat setups.

IGN: You folks put together a super-impressive title on many levels but especially in the graphics department. There are still a lot of developers out there who can't seem to get visuals to work on the PlayStation 3. What's your secret? Why can you do this but a number of other developers pump out games that are framey and suffering from muddy textures?

Amy: Well, we're fortunate in that we've got a very talented team of artists, and a really experienced, brilliant programming staff. And as a first-party developer, we're able to focus all of our energy exclusively on the PlayStation3 and really take advantage of the Cell processor and the SPUs, which is a big advantage. We've also had the benefit of working closely with Sony's first-party technology teams in creating the "PlayStation Edge" tools and libraries (which also help other PlayStation3 developers).

IGN: Is there a chance for downloadable content? If so, what is it, and if not, why not?

Amy: We don't currently have any plans for downloadable content – instead, we included all our bonus content as unlockables right on the game disc. We're excited about future integration with Home, though, and are looking forward to supporting Home with additional content when we're able to.

IGN: Nathan and Elena: why didn't they kiss?

Amy: Well they almost did, before Sullivan ruined the moment. But in the end, it kind of felt like the "too obvious" thing to do. I think it makes the relationship between the characters more authentic and endearing that we didn't go for the obvious kiss. After all, they're still just getting to know each other by the end of the game, so there's some social awkwardness there that we thought would be more genuine than a big romantic ending.

IGN: If we can toss the typical beating-around-the-bush thing aside – we all but know there's going to be a sequel because Uncharted sold so well, random comments in the media, etc. – what can you tell us about the future adventures of Nathan Drake? As much as the game cites pulp adventures as an influence, can we expect to see Elena back for another adventure or will there be another leading lady – a la Indiana Jones. PLEASE tell us something! A release window? Anything?! We're dying here!

Amy: C'mon, you know I can't answer any of those questions! I wish I could, but it's just too early to talk about what we're working on next. We'll just have to keep you in suspense for a while. :)
