At Sony's Keynote press conference (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/engadget-and-joystiq-live-from-sonys-e3-2007-keynote/), Phil Harrison introduced, Echochrome, saying it has "possibly the least graphics and most gameplay of any title you are going to see this week." The puzzle game, in development by Sony's internal Japanese studio, seemingly has players direct an outline of a drawing-model doll walking through black-and-white, three-dimensional mazes.

The levels resemble MC Escher doodles and optical illusions, with a distant leg of a puzzle becoming the top layer after a quick rotation. While little was explained other than a simple preview video, players seem to control Echochrome by these rotations, changing and warping perspective.

Harrison didn't announce a shipping date, but he noted that several games, including Echochrome would be available by March, 2008. The game will be available for PSP on UMD and for PS3 download on the Playstation Network.

1up Preview

One of the more unique games that we got to play for the first time at this year's Tokyo Game Show was Echochrome (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3161198), the PSN puzzler that uses optical illusions as its gameplay foundation. Making use of really simple visuals -- black outlines on a white background, or vice versa -- the game has you rotating the environment in order to see your character progress through various optical challenges. See a gap between two ledges? Rotate the screen so that a column obstructs your view -- now that gap is gone.

The first thing the game teaches you are its five basic laws.
1. Subjective Translation: Changing your perspective can connect paths.
2. Subjective Landing: If an object looks to be below you, your character can land on it.
3. Subjective Existence: If you can't see a gap because it's obstructed, a path exists.
4. Subjective Absence: If you obstruct a hole from your vision, it no longer exists.
5. Subjective Jump: By rotating your perspective you can jump to new areas.

Using these laws, you're then tasked with making it through an example stage that presents a challenge for each one. You control a white faceless dummy that's supposed to follow a black one. The dummies walk on their own -- your only interaction with them is by manipulating the environment.
I snapped a photo of the TGS demo to give you a better idea of how it works. http://media.1up.com/media?id=3400068 See the pillar right in front of the white dummy? That's actually obstructing the view of a gap in that ledge; with it there, the white dummy can now reach the black one. Ah, but you see the hole in the ledge up ahead of the black dummy? Unless you do something, your dummy will fall through it. So you need to rotate the environment counterclockwise so that the pillar will obstruct your vision of the hole, thus following the rule of Subjective Absence. Alternatively, though, see how -- in this perspective, at least -- the ledge on the bottom of the screen appears directly below the two holes above? You could fall through the hole and make it to the ledge below -- as long as you wouldn't rotate the environment enough to show that the ledge is, in fact, not below it in a 3D space. And that's how Echochrome works. It involves a great amount of thinking and experimenting, as there are potentially several ways to solve the challenges. Although the TGS demo was basically just an intro to the game's concepts, we're already incredibly excited about it thanks to the taste we were given. The M.C. Escher style optical illusions provide a perfect canvas for puzzle gameplay, and Echochrome challenged us in ways videogames rarely do. It's definitely one we're looking forward to seeing a lot more of in the future.

IGN TGS2007 Hands-On

September 20, 2007 - There was a day when all puzzle games were essentially the same. Blocks fall from a certain direction and feature assorted colors, you align them in a specific way, they disappear and the process repeats itself. Somewhere along the way the paradigm was changed, and it has continued to change even more severely over the last year or so with games like Portal bending our minds in entirely new directions. At this year's TGS we got the chance to get our hands on a conceptual demonstration of Echochrome (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/949/949613.html), a game that looks to once again redefine the way we think of the everyday puzzler.

The first thing that you need to know about Echochrome is its five essential laws. They are as follows: subjective translation - change perspective to connect paths, what you see becomes truth; subjective landing - your character will land in what appears to be below; subjective existence - you can't see it but there is a path, subjective absence - hide the hole and it no longer exists; subjective jump - where you want to jump is up to your will. We know what you're thinking: that sounds very psychologically deep and everything, but what exactly does it all mean?

Well, more or less, perception is the name of the game with Echochrome and it's what will guide you to ultimate success. See, the game space is a very straightforward, black and white system of ledges that are connected by a number of things. Those being staircases, holes for your character - which resembles a faceless crash dummy - to fall through, and jump pads for your character to launch off of; at least that's all that we were shown in our playtest, there could be more in the final retail build. One of the real tricks to the gameplay comes once you pick up the controller and find out that you have no control over your blank-faced dummy, he just walks along the straight ledge, whether that means through a hole, onto a jump pad, or into a wall, that really doesn't matter to him (or is it her?).

What you do have control over is the stage itself. You can rotate the level on several axes to distort your perception of it. Say for instance that there's a gap standing between you and your echo (the echo is basically your shadow which you need to follow around the level in order to complete the stage) but there's also a giant column jutting out somewhere else within view. You can then rotate the level so that the giant column is covering up the hole in the stage, making it possible for your character to walk over the place where it once would have fallen. Like we said earlier, what you see becomes truth.

The same goes for holes and jumps which can either drop you into the white abyss that surrounds the level or plop you onto a ledge on a different elevation, but it all depends on your perspective and how you rotate the stage. Even though the concept demonstration we played was short, the style and innovativeness of Echochrome shined through in a big way. In another mark of innovative thinking it appears that the game will be available for both PS3 and PSP. Download it on one and you can load it onto another. Pretty sweet if you ask us. We'll have much more on Echochrome in the near future so be sure to keep it locked to IGN.com.

Hands-On With Echochrome, The Pros And Cons Of Sony’s Bold PS3 Game

Echochrome is tough.

MTV Multiplayer learned that Tuesday morning during a two-hour visit with Sony reps at a mid-town Manhattan showcase of the biggest PSP and PS3 games of early 2008.

Echochrome is a puzzle game set on a landscape of floating shapes and line-drawn optical illusions. Classical music plays as the gamer rotates the playing field, opening and closing new paths for a little stick man who needs to walk to a goal. Turning the level just right creates and opens up paths. The proper twist might let the character bridge gaps that, thanks to the swivel, no longer appear to be there.Πηγή: http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2007/12/11/hands-on-with-echochrome-the-pros-and-cons-of-sonys-bold-ps3-game

Sony preps Echochrome demo for Japan this March 6 If you're intent on getting an early run of Echochrome, then you may want to keep an eye out on the region's PlayStation Network. SCEJ has recently announced that they will be releasing a demo of this puzzle title for both the PSP and PlayStation 3 on March 6 (Thursday) next week. That's 13 days before the full game's release.

The Echochrome demo for the PSP is expected to be downloadable from Japan's PlayStation Spot locations, and the PlayStation Store (either PSP or PC). The demo's PlayStation 3 port will be available via the PlayStation Store

IGN: echochrome Demo Hands-on

Some games are constantly criticized for a lack of creativity or unique content. That's simply impossible when it comes to echochrome, SCE Studios Japan's upcoming puzzle title that bends both spatial awareness and physics to create a new kind of gameplay experience. IGN were lucky enough to check out the title at GDC, but the Japanese PlayStation store recently released a demo of the game for players to check out. IGN were eager to see if there were any new items to be found within the demo, so they grabbed the PS3 version and prepared to realign their perceptions of the world around them.Πηγή: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/857/857830p1.html
