Resistance: Fall Of Man 2 Details?

Surfer Girl Reviews Star Wars is at it again, this time with "exclusive" info on the sequel to Insomniac's FPS for the PlayStation 3.Aside from the first and last level, the game takes place entirely in the United States, where someone who may or may not be Sgt. Nathan Hale (who plays a role in the story) has to deal with the Chimeran invasion of the US in such places as San Francisco and Chicago. And there is a cliffhanger ending that sets up for a third title. Vehicles will be included in multiplayer this time around, one will be able to take to the sky with three new vehicles or boogie it down on the ground with the three vehicles from the first game's Campaign. There's even a tentative release date of November 2008. Again, it could all be pure speculation, but if it turns out to be true, you'll thank us. Or Surfer Girl. How about both?

Resistance: Fall of Man Sequel Ready for Pre Alpha Testing (http://www.ripten.com/2007/11/12/resistance-fall-of-man-sequel-ready-for-pre-alpha-testing/#respond)

http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/res_fallofman_two.jpg

A trusted source has let us know that Resistance 2, the sequel to the PS3 launch title, is ready for the pre-Alpha testing stage. According to our source, Sony is going to be hiring a ton of testers in January to put Resistance 2 through a stress test.

Resistance was one of the best PS3 exclusives, and without a doubt we’re sure Resistance 2 will be on everyone’s wish list when a release date is announced.

With almost no other information released about this game so far, and with no screenshots to gawk at, it’s hard to say how good it’s going to be. But if it’s anything like the first, with its crazy weapons and great looking monsters, they could probably stick to the game’s roots and please old fans. Another option might be for them to go crazy with the story and offer us a completely new experience.

After the initial testing is over, we may see a lot of buzz around this game as testers talk about their experiences. Whatever the case may be, I’m hopeful Resistance 2 will be a smash success just like the first.

Η Sony κατοχυρώνει το «Resistance 2» (http://www.gameover.gr/default.php?pid=6&cat_id=11&cat=PS3&art_id=4269)

http://www.gameover.gr/photos/Resistance_Screens_01-thumb.jpg

Δεν υπάρχει λογικός άνθρωπος που παρατηρεί την αγορά και δε θα προέβλεπε ότι η Sony θα άφηνε το Resistance μόνο με το Fall of Man στα καταστήματα. Η Sony Computer Entertainment of America επιβεβαίωσε τις εικασίες, κατοχυρώνοντας την ονομασία «Resistance 2», η οποία θα χρησιμοποιηθεί στη συνέχεια του πετυχημένου first person shooter της, το οποίο αποτελεί κι ένα από τα παιχνίδια με τον υψηλότερο μέσο όρο βαθμολογιών από το διεθνή Τύπο για το «νέο» σύστημα.

Resistance 2 / Insomniac's Next Project To Be Revealed Soon (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-99032.aspx)

I get the impression that alot of people here didn't really listen to the Full Moon Show. It was Insomniac's podcast and it was pretty good. They took a break after the release of R&C:F and said they'll be back Thursday the 17th, because "they'll have some stuff to talk about by then".

http://www.insomniacgames.com/podcast/podcast.php This the the link to the last podcast.

The odds are pretty solid that it's Resistance 2(especially with all the Surfer Girl nonsense). They have talked about how they liked when they took a break from Ratchet to do something completely different and hinted that their eager to get back to the gritty. So it seems obvious that Resistance and Ratchet will become bi-annual franchises. But three's still no guarantee that they are going to announce Resistance 2 or any game for that matter. They may talk about their PSN downloadable game that they've hinted at or they may confirm that their doing another Ratchet(since the last one ended in a cliff-hanger). It may even be something as weak as Patch notes for Resistance 1's multiplayer. But the odds are pretty good. So in one week we might get something. If not then atleast it's an alright podcast.

More Resistance 2 details emerge
http://www.n4g.com/M/8/News/99000/99980_hs.jpg

Semi-official Sony blog Three Speech (http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=819) has let loose more details of the newly unveiled Resistance: Fall of Man sequel.
Action will take place in the United States, apparently, and feature partially randomised geometry to keep things fresh each time you blast through it.
Those gigantic 60-player online battles will be squad-based, and have you choose your role from one of three classes: a hardy soldier with heavy weaponry, a special ops type for ranged attacks like sniping and a medic.
Resistance 2 will matchmake you with others of your skill too, ensuring you never face a team disproportionately better than yours.
New enemies will also feature, unsurprisingly, such as Chameleon and Stalker baddies with a cloaking ability. Arnold could beat them.
Insomniac has also taken feedback from the first game to improve long checkpoints and the health system, as well as using more of the PS3 power to cram greater numbers of enemies on screen and boost their intelligence to Key Stage 2.
Yesterday (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=90554) US magazine Game Informer revealed its Resistance 2 cover feature, effectively announcing its arrival to the world.
The biggest new additions are a separate eight-player co-operative campaign (or two-player in local mode), and the enormous online battles.
Resistance 2 is due for release this year on PS3, according to Three Speech, and you can see the first shots over in our gallery (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=90673).

Resistance 1 used just 10 - 20% of SPUs (http://www.insomniacgames.com/tech/articles/0108/files/RFOM_Debriefing_public.pdf)

This comes straight from Insomniac's brochure released on 1ts January,2008.

Summary of SPU usage found on page 34 of the 38 paged documentation :-

SPUs
All our systems started off as RAW mode
The only long term (not finished this frame) asynchronous
processing is the collision on the raw SPUs
We use [Job Manager] but not all systems use it in the typical way
of fire and forget. Most of our system require the SPU to be
running a particular system at the same time as the PPU.
To ensure the SPU is doing what we want at the correct time we
send [Job Manager] the job and use our own thin
synchronization and job buffering schemes using the locked-line
for communication
10-20% total SPU utilization

Everything we know about this PS3 shooter sequel so far.

Over the years, Insomniac Games has built up a reputation for releasing a new iteration of their Ratchet & Clank (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157407) franchise yearly on PlayStation 2. One of the first developers to fully immerse themselves in PS3 development, Insomniac looks like it will now be splitting its hard work between Ratchet and Resistance (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140599), with each series continuing the tradition of a sequel every other year. Insomniac's wheel-o-development for 2008 has landed on Resistance, and the recent revelation of Resistance 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3165179) in the pages of Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/default.htm) piqued the curiosity of fans of the original. With a large list of upgrades and new content for the sequel, we set out to round up all the information that's been revealed about Resistance 2 so far, from both Game Informer and Insomniac's Full Moon Show (http://www.insomniacgames.com/podcast/podcast.php) podcast.

The Story

The four "Cs": Campaign, co-op, competitive, and community. Insomniac CEO Ted Price says that they want to connect these four elements through gameplay and story in a much tighter way than most developers do. The co-op mode, for example, features a plot that runs parallel to Nathan Hale's story in the single-player and serves as a bridge to multiplayer. While single-player will provide a more developed story about a single soldier, all of these game modes taken together will paint a broad picture of the human war for survival against the Chimeran invaders.

It begins where the first game ended: Literally! The final, post-credits epilogue from Resistance 1 serves as the opening cinematic for this game. (SPOILER WARNING) Nathan Hale's mysterious captors fly him to Iceland, but their vehicle is quickly shot down, leading Hale into the first level and eventually to where most of the game takes place.

Bad stuff's going down in America: In the first game, players took on the role of an American soldier trying to fight back an alien invasion in Britain. For the sequel, Nathan Hale heads home. Due to the events of Resistance's alternate history timeline, 1950s America never fully recovered from the Great Depression. Hale begins his American campaign in San Francisco and will then move across the United States, taking on the Chimeran forces wherever he's needed. Expect as diverse a list of environments as can be plucked from the American landscape.

Narrators are so two years ago: Despite actually playing as Nathan Hale, the majority of Resistance's story was delivered in a third-person narrative by one Captain Rachel Parker. Exposition is out this time, with the plot's focus fully on Hale and his squadmates -- for the single-player campaign at least.

Nathan makes some friends: Near the beginning of Resistance 2, Hale will join a special group of soldiers called the Sentinels who, like Hale, are resistant to the Chimeran virus. The main thrust of the game's plot actually picks up two years after Hale has hooked up and trained extensively with this group. Don't get too attached to the new guys though; Insomniac has been stressing the bleak tone they're shooting for with Resistance 2. Overwhelming enemy numbers and plenty of dead allies are practically guaranteed.

Who are the Cloven?: This mysterious third faction was heavily hinted at in the first game and even available as a skin choice in multiplayer, but they never actually entered the game's story. We're hedging our bets that the Cloven will finally make an appearance in Resistance 2, although Insomniac has given reason to believe that we won't receive full information on who they are and what they're doing until future sequels.

The Single-Player Campaign

It's already finished!: Unbelievable as it may seem, Insomniac claims that more or less all of the single-player maps are finished and running in a rough state. This is largely due to a new initiative from the developer that has them focusing on building the gameplay first and then adding art assets and balance tweaks later. Large portions of the co-op campaign are also confirmed to be running, so that fall 2008 release date is looking pretty much like a certainty now.

Bosses are back: Insomniac wants to prove that bosses can work in first-person shooters. Resistance had some pretty huge creatures to take down, but for the sequel they're pulling out all of the stops. The robotic Goliath (pictured here (http://www.1up.com/do/slideshow?pager.offset=1&mt=0&cId=3165179&mId=3479173)), for example, looms a full 150 in-game feet taller than Nathan Hale, and several other similarly large bosses are promised.

Traversing the countryside in style: Vehicles are going to play a part in Resistance 2 in a big way, but so far Insomniac has been tight-lipped about what types of vehicles will be controllable. They have mentioned that airborne enemies and battles will be featured, though, and a couple of screenshots show off some cool-looking (and very prominently-placed) jets. We're also hoping that vehicles will carry over to co-op and multiplayer, but the first game's multiplayer didn't contain any of the vehicles from single-player.

The enemies have evolved: As might be expected, Resistance 2 will contain plenty of new bad guys. Beyond the aforementioned Goliath boss, only one has been revealed: the Chameleon. This enemy brings to mind the Elites from the Halo (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3144308) games. They cloak and attack close-range with melee blades. Even the recycled enemy types from the first game will have more complex AI, new weapons and other tricks. The Hybrid, for example, now comes equipped with a new suit of armor that provides extra problems for players.

The graphics will be upgraded: No big surprise here, I know, but Insomniac took some of the quibbles about the original game's visuals to heart. Resistance looked beautiful, no doubt, but some gamers thought that the concentration on gigantic environments left a bit to be desired in the details. In Resistance 2, the guns, enemies, locales, and anything else you need to view up close will purportedly look a whole lot better -- and they already do if the early screenshots are any evidence.

The Co-Op Campaign

Four is fine, but eight is great: Trumping all genre expectations, Insomniac has decided to include a co-op mode that can contain as few as two players or as many as eight. The random soldiers in this campaign will fight their way through objective-based, plot-lite levels that will coincide with Nathan Hale's single-player story in some ways. Reportedly, this mode will be as long as or longer than the single-player.

It's got class: Each of the partners joining up for a run-through of co-op will have to choose what role they want to play. The traditional heavy solider comes equipped with a chaingun and lots of health for soaking up attacks; the Special Ops class carries a scoped rifle and is all set for long-range combat; and the Medic uses a special gun to drain energy from enemies and then feed it back into allies. Contrary to popular internet rumor, these classes have not been confirmed to be a part of multiplayer, and Insomniac's latest Full Moon Show (http://www.insomniacgames.com/podcast/podcast.php) podcast strongly implies that they will not.

It's only as difficult as you deserve: Playing through Halo 3 on Legendary with a few friends is quite a blast, but that experience will be a bit different in Resistance 2. Players will not be able to choose a difficulty level when starting up a new co-op game. Instead, the game will ramp up how hard it is based on the team's skill and rank (which increases as you play).

Random friends and features: If you don't have eight good buddies with PS3s and a hankering for some alien killing, don't fret. Insomniac is working out a system that will hook up random players online who are at the same point in the co-op mode's story. The co-op levels will also feature some random elements. Levels will not be fully randomized (another popular misconception about the game), but the geometry and enemy placement of certain areas will change with each playthrough to keep things fresh.

Someone got their story in my multiplayer: Don't expect cut-scenes or anything, but the environments, objectives, and actions in the multiplayer matches will have real context in the Resistance universe. We're guessing that some of the larger single-player and co-op battles and maps will be replayable in some form in multiplayer.

Massive numbers should not mean massive confusion: 60 players (up from Resistance's max number of 40) may sound like an awful lot, but Insomniac is doing everything in their power to make sure competitive battles don't get out of hand. Players will be split into lobbies of six-to-eight-member squads, each with unique objectives. Specific areas on each map will foster frantic large-scale battles, but most of the fighting should come in the former of smaller skirmishes.

Community is key: Insomniac continues pushing community as one of the core pieces of Resistance rather than an afterthought. How serious is the developer? Well, for one the game will feature dedicated servers for player statistics and community tools in addition to actual games. Myresistance.net (http://www.myresistance.net/) (currently in beta) will feature full profile pages, clan support, and social networking bonuses -- all of which Insomniac says will be up and running by the time the game launches.

Resistance 2: the single-player campaign is basically finished (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/06/resistance-2-the-single-player-campaign-is-basically-finished/)

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2008/02/1upmedia.jpg

Insomniac Games' Resistance 2 has hardly been announced, and already we're getting a flood, nay, a wealth of information on the title. In this 1UP feature, we learn a lot about the state of the game and much to our surprise, the road to completion is not too far away. The feature mainly summarizes what we've learned so far about the different modes of play, the size of the online matches, the basic storyline and the enemies we'll encounter. We'll highlight some of the more important bits.

First off, new enemies. Enhanced Chimera with more form-fitting battle armor, because even aliens need to be fashionable and destructive. Boss battles will return, probably in response to some of Halo 3's gigantic monstrosities -- one enemy towers 150ft above protagonist Nathan Hale. The single-player maps are, surprisingly, more or less complete and running in a rough state. Amazing that the game is technically "done" but not "cooked". It's like buying the turkey -- you still have to marinate and roast it. But the turkey is there. The game's difficulty will change depending on you and your teammates' skill level. There's more, but really, you should read for yourself to see what piques your interest -- and prevents us from revealing too much without your consent.

Resistance II - Q&A - talking about development, online feature focus, etc...

Resistance 2 Q&A (PS3)

Ted Price talks about the follow-up to Insomniac's first-person shooter.

By: Giancarlo Varanini | GTGV
Feb 7, 2008

"The first thing you need is a good story, period."

Ted Price, founder and CEO, Insomniac Games

You may already know that Insomniac is working on a sequel to its PlayStation 3 launch game, Resistance: Fall of Man, but what you probably don't know is just how much of an undertaking the sequel is for the studio. The team isn’t looking to make a few subtle improvements over features introduced in the original game or just continue protagonist Nathan Hale’s story from the end of the first game. Rather, they’re introducing a whole new suite of features, including 60-player online play, as well as an eight-player cooperative campaign that has a separate storyline from the main single-player campaign. We had a chance to speak with Insomniac founder and CEO, Ted Price, about these features and what it’s been like to take on a project of this size.

GameTap: What were some of the things that Insomniac learned from the original Resistance in terms of both development and fan reaction to the game?

Ted Price: The most important thing we learned was how to develop a game for PS3. Moving from PS2 to PS3 was a big transition for us. We had to completely rethink the way we made games in terms of asset creation, engine programming, and systems development, and we went through a lot of pain as a result. But at the same time we were able to develop project management techniques more appropriate for current-gen development. This paid huge dividends on our second PS3 game--Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. And now that we're in production on our third PS3 game, Resistance 2, we're refining our production techniques and technology even further. This means we can take more risks with the design of Resistance 2. It also should mean that we all have a much better work-life balance than we ever have had during Insomniac's history.

GameTap: After it was released, it seemed like the online aspect of Resistance became instantly popular. Is that the reason why so much attention is being paid to the online aspects of Resistance 2, or does it have to do more with a general trend in gaming?

Ted Price: I think it's both. With Resistance: Fall of Man, we put a lot of effort into creating a multiplayer game that set new standards in terms of numbers of players, non-existent lag, customization of game types and unique online modes. I don't think that any FPS at the time featured 40 online players at once--which made the lag-free nature of the game really stand out. And since Resistance 2 is upping the ante with 60-player online competitive modes, eight-player online co-op--which are two features no other FPS offers--plus lots more to be announced soon, it's generating a lot of positive talk.

But FPS players really do flock to online these days. One reason would be the pick-up-and-play nature of most multiplayer modes. However, I think online multiplayer's increasing popularity has a lot more to do with community. Competitive online modes in shooters are a great place for people to connect and share a common passion. And most first-person shooters encourage this form of community through features such as clans, friends lists, parties, and external websites--all of which and more we provided with Resistance. As a note, our Resistance website, www.myresistance.net (http://www.myresistance.net/), has continued to grow by leaps and bounds since the release of the first game. We attribute this to a devoted legion of Resistance fans who continue to play online.

GameTap: It's been noted that Insomniac doesn't want to sacrifice quality of individual modes in the game in favor of just having one really good campaign or a really good online option. How much more difficult has that made development?

Ted Price: Well, it certainly makes development more complex. And more expensive, since we need a larger overall team to build a game with multiple components. One of our biggest challenges is finding ways to share gameplay code, art and animation between the multiplayer and single-player teams. The key is ensuring we all communicate constantly to prevent duplicating each others' efforts. For example, on Resistance: FOM we ended up coding completely separate versions of our weapons--a version for single-player and a version for multiplayer. We didn't have the time to figure out a way around this. But now that we've had some time to focus on better code sharing, we're discovering a lot of new efficiencies.

GameTap: Sixty-player multiplayer, seems like a huge undertaking--how do you get something like that to meet the level of quality expected and into the final retail package without sacrificing any features?

Ted Price: Having a dedicated multiplayer team is absolutely key. But just as important is the great planning they do plus lots of collaboration, lots of prototyping, lots of testing and plenty of focus. Also, our multiplayer team is made up of online veterans--guys and girls who have been through many production cycles and know how to get lots of killer features into games with sacrificing quality. Simply put: They rock.

GameTap: Cooperative team play seems to be getting more and more popular lately with games like Halo 3 and Team Fortress 2. In your mind, what makes cooperative play not only successful, but something that people will want to play over and over again in Resistance 2?

Ted Price: I think we all feel that co-op is most fun when you get to try out different tactics with friends. Our co-op mode is designed to encourage experimentation. With three different classes, tons of different enemy types to fight, hugely varied gameplay setups, and some fairly open levels, no encounter will play out the same way twice. Just changing the group makeup will create a huge difference in the way the game plays. For example, playing with six medics and two special ops guys is a lot different than playing with two soldiers, three medics and three special ops dudes. And there are other things we plan to do to keep the co-op experience fresh each time you play. But we're not revealing them yet.

GameTap: In recent weeks, we've seen games like Call of Duty 4 overtake Halo 3 in terms of popularity of online play. Do you see what those developers are doing and adjust your approach accordingly, or was there already set plan in mind for Resistance 2's online multiplayer matches?

Ted Price: We had already begun designing Resistance 2 multiplayer almost a year before Call of Duty 4 was released. That's not to say we're ignoring what's popular in online play. We get out there and play the competition. We pay attention to what players are saying on the boards. Either what we see makes us confident that we've chosen to do the right things with our design, or we have a chance to change things up if we think players' tastes are evolving.

GameTap: How do you feel about ranks and rewards through online play, like in Call of Duty 4?

Ted Price: Since we also offered ranks and rewards in Resistance online play, we feel pretty good about it. Call of Duty definitely took rewards a step further than we did in the first game by offering weapon upgrades and other very cool unlockables. I think they've set a new bar in this area for FPS games.

Resistance 2 will have bigger and badder enemies.

GameTap: What does Insomniac view as being the most important part of growing an online community for a game like Resistance 2? Is it all about regular downloadable content, or fostering a competitive spirit, or just making it as easy as possible to get into multiplayer?

Ted Price: First, many of our multiplayer modes are designed around teamwork. The better your team members coordinate with each other, the more wins you'll have and the cooler stuff you unlock. And by encouraging teamwork within the game, we also hope to encourage people to communicate with each other outside of the game. So the second thing we focus on is providing better ways to connect to other players when you're not killing Chimera. This includes providing a robust community website like www.myresistance.net (http://www.myresistance.net/), full clan functionality, buddies and invites, parties, etc. Features like these are absolutely essential to growing a dedicated online community.

And one more thing that's easy to forget--communication with players. We spend a lot of time on myresistance.net and via our Full Moon Show podcast answering questions and collecting feedback. We also spend a lot of time in the game making sure that the gameplay remains balanced and looking for areas we can improve the game through patches. This kind of symbiotic relationship between players and developers is really important for the longevity of any online game.

GameTap: Shooters typically don't have much in the way of provocative or interesting storylines outside of "we have to kill all of the aliens," but that seems to be changing as of late. What are the keys to telling a good story in a first-person shooter, and how will that come into play for Resistance 2? Is the same attention being paid to the story being crafted for the cooperative campaign?

Ted Price: Actually there have been a lot of really unique shooter stories crafted around the core goal of killing aliens. And you could make your statement about any genre. Heck, Ratchet & Clank is really about killing aliens.

Anyway, telling a good story in a first-person shooter isn't too much different than telling a good story in any other genre. The first thing you need is a good story, period. The story has to make sense throughout with no deadends or inconsistencies. Then you need characters who will be seen often enough to develop and who can help develop the main character through interaction with him or her. Then, and this is what is so hard to do, the story has got to be integrated with gameplay. It's no longer enough to have movies at the beginning and end of each level--the story also has to be told through real-time events without screwing up the gameplay.

This has been a big focus of ours with Resistance 2. Compared to Resistance: Fall of Man, we do much more in-game storytelling. This takes a lot of coordination between our designers and writers, but as a result the player should feel like he's driving the story versus being along for the ride.

We also keep the focus on Nathan Hale in Resistance 2. We've dropped the narration we had in the first game. The story is told from Hale's point of view as he moves through the game. Again, this is necessary to keep the player immersed in the story and the gameplay at the same time. The two should not feel separate.

As far as co-op goes, we have a different story planned for that campaign. Since all of the allied characters will be played by real people, we can't tell the story the same way. In other words, we won't have NPCs traveling along with you and helping relate story events in real time. But there will be a story moving you along. We're saving more details for later.

GameTap: How has the change in setting--from Europe to the U.S.--come into play during the development of Resistance 2? Was there always a plan to open up the environments a little more, allowing for larger battles, or is that something that spawned out of necessity?

Ted Price: Better technology developed here at Insomniac and a better understanding of battle design is allowing us to create larger battles--it doesn't have much to do with where the game takes place. But setting the game in the U.S. has given us a lot more freedom in terms of visual variety. The U.S. is an amazingly diverse place when it comes to landscapes and cities and we're taking advantage of that. Every location in the game should feel unique.

GameTap: For the huge fans of Resistance, what would you tell them to be most excited about in Resistance 2?

Ted Price: Man, everything. I could go down a laundry list of all of the features we've already announced. But that's kind of redundant.

So if I wasn't involved in the development of the game, I think what would excite me most is finding out more about Hale, about the origin of the Chimera, about what the hell is going on in the world. I'd want a story that felt fresh with new twists, that was heavily intertwined with the gameplay and that sucked me even further into the Resistance universe. Plus I'd want nastier and smarter enemies, new weapons to play with, and lots of gameplay that isn't standard first-person fare. And I'd want an absolutely killer multiplayer experience.

Well, that's all included. And it's just the beginning.

Resistance 2 - Attack on the USA - Exclusive new details

Resistance 2 will feature the Chimera in a major onslaught at the San Francisco Bay Bridge and other American landmarks.

Insomniac games have finally started talking facts. In a major feature of the Official PlayStation Magazine UK they have revealed a number of exciting new details. Resistance 2 continues where the first game finished, with Nathan travelling to Iceland, the base of SRPA (Special Projects Research Administration.) When he gets there he discovers that there are others humans who have been infected by mutant DNA who also have mutant healing and telepathic abilities. They have been bought together as a task force known as the Sentinels, each with their own abilities and weapons.

The Multi-player modes are not tacked-on cameos to the single player game, they are fully fledged co-stars! A lot of work has been put into the co-op. Lead Designer Colin Munson says "Eight players is that sweet team size. It's enough so that you pretty much know the people on your team but it's big enough to let new players in." The co-op campaign will focus on teamwork, with the game testing players ability to work together. "The initial bridge attack forces players to deal with danger from multiple angles. The Titans meanswhile require the squad to divide and conquer, as these behomoths can easily take out an entire squad with one hit from a rocket cannon."

The 60 person multiplayer game will be divided into 2 teams of 30. Each team will be divided into smaller squads with their own objectives. Insomniac will make it easy and fun to get online.

* There are 3 co-op character classes. Soldier, medic, and special-ops trooper. Each can collect XP points to improve their skills (ala Call of Duty 4.)

* The Splitter is a new weapon, a mini-gun that can spray a barrage of rounds

* Special abilities can be 'charged up' by killing aliens. If your shields are down, kill more aliens to recharge.

* The medic will shoot a special gun on the injured

* The new stalker has been significantly upgraded in detail level and functionality. It now features a big red eye at the front.

* New super-bosses. Giant size. That arent taken down the same way as other enemies are taken down. They have full AI, and dynamic animation.

Hopefully ALL PlayStation 3 owners will finally get around to buying themselves a headset/PlayStation Eye, because shouting tactics when no one is listening is never fun. Seriously, if you can afford a PS3 surely you can pay £10 quid for a cheap bluetooth?! [Rant Over] 60 player battles is gonna be as brilliant as it sounds.

You can read the full article in the March issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK. Resistance 2 will be released in Autumn this year.Πηγή: http://www.playthree.net/2008/02/resistance-2-attack-on-usa-exclusive.html

"OPM reveals new Resistance 2 plot, gameplay info

Fresh details regarding Insomniac’s upcoming [PlayStation3 (http://www.psu.com/OPM-reveals-new-Resistance-2-plot,-gameplay-info-News--a0002713-p0.php#) exclusive sequel, Resistance 2, have surfaced in the latest issue of the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine this week.

According to the publication, Resistance 2’s plot will kick off not long after the events of Resistance: Fall of Man, and will once again centre around the battle-hardened solider, Nathan Hale.

Having survived the Chimera’s onslaught against the United Kingdom, Hale journey’s to Iceland, the base of the Special Projects Research Administration (SPRA), where he discovers that its human occupants have become infected with mutant DNA, giving them special healing and telepathic abilities.

Ted Price, President of [Insomniac (http://www.psu.com/OPM-reveals-new-Resistance-2-plot,-gameplay-info-News--a0002713-p0.php#), described the new and improved Chimera enemies that gamers will be facing, including the ‘Chamelion Chimera’, which the player can detect by the footprints it will leave behind, or the outline of the creature caused by falling rainwater.

Price also touched on the games bosses, stating, "We've taken some of the lessons we've learnt from Ratchet and Clank (http://www.psu.com/OPM-reveals-new-Resistance-2-plot,-gameplay-info-News--a0002713-p0.php#): Tools of Destruction and used them with a twist. Bosses are significantly larger than anything we've tried in our games. One in particular is several hundred feet tall.”

The magazine also places the multiplayer (http://www.psu.com/OPM-reveals-new-Resistance-2-plot,-gameplay-info-News--a0002713-p0.php#) offering under the microscope, confirming that the eight-player co-op feature will include a proper campaign and unique objectives for players to face.

Furthermore, a new weapon has been confirmed (dubbed “The Splitter”), described by OPM as a type of mini gun “capable of spraying a terrifying barrage of rounds.” Players will also be able to utilize a variety of special powers, healing included, which are in turn charged by dispatching enemies.
Resistance 2 is due for release on PS3 (http://www.psu.com/OPM-reveals-new-Resistance-2-plot,-gameplay-info-News--a0002713-p0.php#) later this year."

Bungie dev: 60-man Resistance 2 will be a "challenge"

FPS rival "interested" to see whether Insomniac can keep Sony's Halo-killer from feeling like "running around in a chat room".

A Bungie employee has said Resistance 2 looks "interesting" but its ambitious 60-player multiplayer will be a "challenge".

Speaking on Bungie's latest podcast (http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=13279), Luke Timmins, multiplayer engineer on Halo 3, said that he was interested in how Resistance 2 developer Insomniac would keep 60-player multiplayer games from feeling like "just running around in a chat room".

The ambitious Resistance 2, touted by fans as Sony's Halo-killer, is scheduled for release on the PS3 exclusively some time in 2008. It will have an impressive eight-player campaign co-op and massive 60-player competitive modes which will focus on squad-versus-squad combat.

Speaking on the Bungie podcast, Timmins said: "Some of the stuff that Resistance is doing about trying to keep jacking up the number of guys in a game... I've played Resistance, and I'm a huge Battlefield 2 fan but I'm still interested in how do you keep that number of guys in a game and make it seem like you are actually playing together and not just running around in a chat room. It's real interesting and I wish them well but, yeah, it's a challenge."Πηγή: http://www.videogamer.com/news/21-02-2008-7589.html

Resistance 2: Confirmed for Fall 2008, Demo Coming in July?

Slipped into the bottom of a press release regarding the extension to Insomniac Games' 'Nocturnal' initiative comes the news that the PS3-exclusive (http://n4g.com/events_gdc2008/News-114420.aspx), Resistance: Fall of Man 2 is due out in Autumn 2008.

The text reads:

"Insomniac Games is currently developing Resistance 2(TM), which will release this fall, exclusively for PlayStation 3."

This would more than suggest, therefore, that the Easter egg hidden in the video we reported yesterday indicates not only more enemies, but a demo for July.Πηγή: http://news.spong.com/article/14865?cb=246

Sony: Resistance 2 to go "toe-to-toe" with Gears 2

Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has said that he expects Insomniac’s forthcoming Resistance 2 to go "toe-to-toe against Gears of War 2” when both games launch later this year.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Steinberg commented, I think one of the biggest games for us will be Resistance 2. We expect that, in November, to go toe-to-toe against Gears of War 2.”

"It will be our third-generation PS3 product. Insomniac, having shipped Resistance 1, quietly sold a million units. And then Ratchet & Clank last fall. This is the third on their technology shipping in November."

He also offered insight into Sony’s relatively low profile at the Game Developers Conference last week, adding, “It just felt stronger coming from so many different high-calibre partners as opposed to self-congratulatory announcements from ourselves that the war is over and the standards battle is complete, and we have a standard and it is us.”

"It just felt like a keynote would be a little bit over the top,” he said.Πηγή: http://www.psu.com/Sony--Resistance-2-to-go-+quot;toe-to-toe+quot;-with-Gears-2--a0002863-p0.php

Ted Price Pt 3: Justifying 60-Player ‘Resistance,’ Competing With ‘Killzone 2′ (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/03/06/ted-price-pt-3-justifying-60-player-resistance-competing-with-killzone-2/)

Over the last 24 hours I’ve posted parts of my DICE summit chat with Insomniac Games president Ted Price. You got the parts that covered “Ratchet,” (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/03/05/insomniacs-ted-price-talks-ratchet-sales-surprises-new-ips/) the parts that dealt with Surfer Girl and storytelling (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/03/05/insomniac%e2%80%99s-ted-price-pt-2-surfer-girl-storytelling-and-resistance-on-a-handheld/). Now you get the “Resistance 2” stuff.
This part started with a bit of skepticism from me about the promised 60-player modes and then goes all over the place — ending at “Killzone 2” and one of my better mid-interview jokes. (If I do say so myself.)
On with it…
Multiplayer: So, people read the Game Informer story [about “Resistance 2″]. People don’t believe the Game Informer story. Because that’s insane amount of content to put into one game. We’re talking about a full-fledged campaign, eight player –
Price: Online co-cop.
Multiplayer: Online co-op, which is a campaign…
Price: One secret about that: it has a story that drives it along and is parallel to the single-player campaign. It is not as in-depth as the single-player campaign. Obviously we’re not going to do the same sort of movies that we do with “Resistance 2″ single-player campaign. I want to make sure that’s clear.
Multiplayer: And then a whole set of multiplayer arenas, maps and what have you, correct?
Price: Correct. Sixty players.
Multiplayer: So, square-acreage or whatever, I assume this is the biggest game you guys have ever tried to make, right?

Price: Yeah.
Multiplayer: How does it compare to “Halo 3″ in the amount of content that it has? Because it seems like this is an attempt to one-up the insane amount of content in “Halo 3.”
Price: Not necessarily. We were not looking at “Halo 3” or looking to one-up anybody at all, other than we wanted to push multiplayer content. With multiplayer we saw an opportunity to up the game to 60 players with not a whole lot of pain on our end. The challenge for us is not technical at this point. It’s design. We’ve got to make sure that when you’re in a 60-player game it doesn’t feel like unmitigated chaos.
So we’ve been spending a lot of time analyzing and trying out different techniques to make sure you know what you’re doing, even though you’re in this massive battle, and it’s working. And it’s fun.
The online co-op for us was a result of getting so many damn complaints about not having online co-op in ‘Resistance 1‘ that we knew we had to do it. But we figured, ‘Screw it, let’s not do what everybody else is doing. Let’s try something different. Let’s add classes to online co-op and let’s create a separate campaign for it and let’s do some stuff that will surprise people.’ And it’s turned out to be a lot of fun. How can we do this? We have a separate multiplayer team who is dedicated to this and has been dedicated to this for a while.
Multiplayer: Do they handle competitive and co-op campaign?
Price: That’s correct. We have a separate team that handles campaign. But they talk — a lot. So there’s a lot of crossover in terms of technology and theme. It’s important to keep all three of those elements — along with community — integrated together so that it feels like it’s not three separate games but that it’s one game with these three cool components.
Multiplayer: What’s your reaction to any skeptics who say this is too much, that there’s no way you can do all of this?
Price: It’s flattering. We certainly don’t think we’re over-reaching. We know we can do it. If people are skeptical, we look forward to proving them wrong.
Multiplayer: The 60-player mode — making sure it’s not unmitigated chaos. It sounds from the way you’re putting it that you guys started with the number. The number’s conceptually exciting: 60 people. And then going from there and dealing with the design challenge of ‘how do we make this a comprehensible, enjoyable game experience?’ Is that right? That sounds a bit dangerous or reckless to be doing it that way.
Price: We knew that we were going to face this challenge even with 40 players. When we introduced 40 players in “Resistance 1″ we felt the need for more mechanisms to get people to keep playing with groups of others. Generally those games can get pretty unwieldy. At that point we began brainstorming on ways to create more structure within a large game. Once we felt comfortable with our techniques we felt we could expand it to larger numbers. And 60 was a number that we also felt technically, comfortable with.
Multiplayer: Have you played a 60-player game yet?
Price: Yep. It’s running. We’ve been playing that and eight-player online co-op for a while.
Multiplayer: How do you find 60 people to play the game?
Price: That’s a good question. We have a large technical group at Insomniac. All of the multiplayer guys get on. And then we have a lot of folks in the company, me included, artists, and they’re playing twice a week for an hour. And then we have Sony jumping in as well. And this allows us to make sure we’re lag-free over big distances. They’re in Foster City. It’s the real thing.
Multiplayer: Can the 60 characters all be on the TV screen at the same time? Or do you have to wall it off and make sure they don’t all show up on the screen.
Price: We always test that. In fact, with “Resistance 1″ we had all 40 players in the room firing rockets. We do that to make sure we’re optimized, just in case people try to do things…
Multiplayer: And they will.
Price: They will. We’ll be fine with that.
Multiplayer: Have you done 60-person stress tests yet?
Price: I think the testers have, but I don’t think we’ve done the rocket test. That tends to come later when we optimize. But so far in the games I’ve been playing, it’s pretty lag free.
Multiplayer: A lot of people were thinking “Killzone 2″ was going to be the big Sony FPS for the end of ‘08. This does too. So is this going to be a head-to-head thing? Have you guys gotten any calls from guys in Amsterdam [where the game is being made]?
Price: Actually, we’re close to those guys. Our engine director was just over at Guerilla taking a tour. And we’ve had them in our offices. There’s definitely a friendship between the two studios. And we are both interested in making sure there’s a separation between the games in terms of theme and gameplay. Where they’re both released in relation to each other, I don’t know. That’s up to Sony marketing. What’s cool is that we both feel that same competitive spirit. We’re pushing each other, and that’s fine. It’s a good-natured competitiveness.
Multiplayer: Did that “Killzone 2″ trailer a couple of years ago fire you up back then?
Price: Yeah, and it was awesome. It was last E3, and when our guys saw it running for real, they thought, “Wow they just raised the bar and we all gotta make sure we can do the same.”
Multiplayer: Are you determined to have the better-looking game?
Price: Not in those words. I think it’s understandable that we’re both going for the best-looking game possible. The games are a lot of different. Yes, they’re both first-person shooters. And they both involve military aspects. But they’re on a different planet. We’re on our world with an alternate history. They’ve got a completely different gameplay style than we do. We’ve got Chimera. They’ve got Helghast.
Multiplayer: You’ve got the church.
Price: I don’t think it worries either of us.

RESISTANCE 2 to utilize DEFERRED RENDERING?

GDC 2008 - Insomniac SPU Programming
02/26/08 - 18:00 PST - Posted by Mike Acton, Engine Director

This year, Eric Christensen and I were planning on speaking together at GDC on our SPU programming practices. But we were told that they prefer presentations with only one speaker, since they tend to be rated higher. So I went it alone. But certainly not without Eric's help in the background in developing the slides and the talk itself.

I thought, all told, that the crowd seemed to respond to our ideas positively. But we do seem to be the odd men out when it comes to managing memory and resources (manually). I am a huge proponent of not automatically managing too many things (e.g. memory via malloc or time via a scheduler) for a console game. I believe very strongly that it forces the team to keep things simple.

If you did attend the GDC SPU talk, I'd be very interested to hear your feedback. If you didn't, then I hope these slides will have enough detail to give you the main ideas.

Resistance 2 Preview

Resistance had its fair share of critics. Consider the following statement: "Few knew who this Sergeant Nathan Hale was, why the American soldier with an impossibly generic face had muscled into Britain's fight for survival against the Chimeran menace. Or why it was thought a workable idea for him to be described in the third-person throughout a first-person game."

No, that's not a quote from Captain Rachel Parker, the distancing voice of exposition from Resistance: Fall of Man. It's just our way to point out how lame her inclusion was and why, in Resistance 2, her absence is just one of many brilliant changes that are set to make the sequel stand head and shoulders above the original.

It's going to be bigger to the point of qualifying as 'vast', deeper than a French poet drunk on laudanum and more social than an STD. And at last, the cookie-cutter hero, the infected American soldier Hale, will finally get to defend his own country after being overpaid, over-sexed (well, probed by aliens) and over here. Go on. @Nonborn: Παλιό νεο απο το gameover.

Η Sony κατοχυρώνει το «Resistance 2» (http://www.gameover.gr/default.php?pid=6&cat_id=11&cat=PS3&art_id=4269)

http://www.gameover.gr/photos/Resistance_Screens_01-thumb.jpg

Δεν υπάρχει λογικός άνθρωπος που παρατηρεί την αγορά και δε θα προέβλεπε ότι η Sony θα άφηνε το Resistance μόνο με το Fall of Man στα καταστήματα. Η Sony Computer Entertainment of America επιβεβαίωσε τις εικασίες, κατοχυρώνοντας την ονομασία «Resistance 2», η οποία θα χρησιμοποιηθεί στη συνέχεια του πετυχημένου first person shooter της, το οποίο αποτελεί κι ένα από τα παιχνίδια με τον υψηλότερο μέσο όρο βαθμολογιών από το διεθνή Τύπο για το «νέο» σύστημα.

Resistance 2
You're one of sixty reasons why it's going to kick maximum ass in all directions (http://www.gamesradar.com/ps3/resistance-2/preview/resistance-2/a-2008031793836813022/g-200801289119828067)

Resistance had its fair share of critics. Consider the following statement: “Few knew who this Sergeant Nathan Hale was, why the American soldier with an impossibly generic face had muscled into Britain’s fight for survival against the Chimera menace. Or why it was thought a workable idea for him to be described in the third-person throughout a first-person game.”

No, that’s not a quote from Captain Rachel Parker, the distancing voice of exposition from Resistance: Fall of Man. It’s just our way to point out how lame her inclusion was and why, in Resistance 2, her absence is just one of many brilliant changes that are set to make the sequel stand head and shoulders above the original. It’s going to be bigger to the point of qualifying as ‘vast’, deeper than a French poet drunk on laudanum and more social than an STD. And at last, the cookie-cutter hero, the infected American soldier Hale, will finally get to defend his own country after being overpaid and over-sexed (well, probed by aliens).

Resistance 2 starts just after the original ended. Nathan Hale, a man seemingly named by machines designed to grind out action movie hero monikers, had fought through the Chimera invasion of Britain. He’d rescued Parker, been abducted and tested on, and had escaped from an alien processing facility after being tainted with an alien infection that enabled him to recharge his health. The single-player campaign ended with him surrounded by sinister masked agents who abducted him by helicopter and flew him to a secret base in Iceland.

http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Games/R/Resistance%202/Bulk%20viewer/PS3/2008-03-17/PSW105.feat_resist2.scrn2--article_image.jpg

Thankfully a plot device has been used in which Hale’s chopper is shot down, enabling him to make his way back to the United States where he joins up with the American resistance and settles into a special unit of hard nuts known as The Sentinels. The game is set in a past where World War II never happened, since mankind has been too busy dealing with aliens to beat on each other. Without Hitler’s rise to power there was no Union-free country for an America ravaged by the great depression to invest in either. Consequently, the Fifties’ USA that Hale returns to isn’t the opulent, future-looking postcard from history you’d expect, but rather one that has never recovered from financial ruin. Two years after Britain falls, it’s invaded from the East and West coasts by massive alien airships packed with otherworldly firepower and a seemingly incessant horde of Chimera.

Middle America is going to get a taste. America’s geography offers some notable differences to Britain’s. It features expansive areas of woodland, mountain ranges and deserts as well as gargantuan cities - and Resistance 2 sees Hale battling through a gamut of them with his first bout of homeland action taking place in San Francisco.

The most obvious difference is scale. America is massive and consequently, so are the battlefields found here. The invasion is of an unprecedented scale and you, as Hale, will always be battling against seemingly insurmountable odds including Chimera bosses that stand 150 feet tall as they smash their way through urban decay and across sprawling plains. The Sentinels have developed immunity to the alien virus, but they’ve still got a fight on their hands on a scale that the PS3 has never seen. There are more enemies on screen, a greater variety of enemies and boss fights to break up the run-and-gun gameplay.

Resistance 2’s campaign can also be played as a parallel story with either two players on the same screen or with eight online in co-operative combat. The online co-op game will log your position and, more importantly, your skill level as defined by your previous performance. You can log on and match up with people who have fought to the same point as you and form groups comprised of players whose abilities are on par with your own. Meaning you won’t be forced to make sure the same crack troop of soldiers meet up, again and again, to reach the campaign’s conclusion. Co-op mode will provide at least the same play time as the main game.

http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Games/R/Resistance%202/Bulk%20viewer/PS3/2008-03-17/PSW105.feat_resist2.scrn3--article_image.jpg

You’ll also get to fight online using your own customised combatant that’s based on one of the three unit class templates. The heaviest unit comes armed with a chaingun that can rip through enemies at a ferocious rate, while each kill charges up a deployable shield that can be set up in front of you and more importantly your team. The special-ops soldier carries a modified version of the original game’s Bullseye rifle that now comes equipped with extra zoom modes, making it both more accurate and more powerful.

But it’s the medic that offers the most interesting inclusion. Usually in class-based online shooters, the player who chooses to perform medical duties spends most of their game time being shouted at by other players who bitch and bawl that medics aren’t there immediately on-site to patch up their wounds. Fortunately Resistance 2’s medics aren’t going to be stuck wiping the bloody brows of reckless gamers, but instead can take a more proactive role thanks to the Medicator gun. This weapon can fire deadly red shots at enemies that with each kill charge up a meter. Aim the same weapon at a friendly unit and when you pull the trigger, you’ll automatically shoot a healing balm of blue energy at them and so be able to fix their broken bodies without having to be in danger. Best of all, medics have a real excuse to get into combat since if they haven’t killed they can’t offer medical aid.

What gives Resistance 2 its unending replayability is the new graphics system used to draw the game. Resistance 2’s levels will feature set geography, like the placements of buildings and topological detail, but will also include a randomising element so that each time you play through, you’ll find new areas of cover and therefore have to develop new strategies. You won’t be able to read a ‘go here and shoot him’ walkthrough for the game because it just wouldn’t work.

Insomniac Games have a history of delivering what they promise - and Fall of Man arrived, as expected, with only minor alterations to its original specifications. Resistance 2 will feature 60-player online battles. When fighting with so many other players, you’ll need to take into account the effect of headset chatter. Players will be corralled into smaller, more workable squads. You’ll log into a lobby system and build up your team of four to eight comrades-in-arms, prep yourselves for battle by agreeing on roles, and then get launched into a full-scale war. Each squad is given objectives to achieve beyond the simple annihilation of the enemy and so the chaos of conflict is formalised into a workable arena. Good job, since these battlefields are sprawling worlds that will encompass everything from tight inner-city fighting to massive open-ground slogs.

http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Games/R/Resistance%202/thumb1280x1280_2219983152_7b336de508_o--article_image.jpg

By using dedicated servers rather than peer-to-peer networking, Insomniac hope to build a greater sense of an online PS3 community than ever. Profile pages will continually update on www.myresistance.net and thanks to a totally open party and clan system, there will be no need to send out invites. Dedicated servers not only make 60-player fluidly feasible, they’ll also enable cleaner voice-chat - invaluable in a game where tactical player talk is vital if you don’t all want to get slaughtered in a haze of ill communication.

Fall of Man was developed before the PlayStation 3 was released and therefore before developers had the time to build-up the expertise needed to get the most from the console’s power. The levels in Resistance will not only be larger, but will offer more structural variety as well as featuring more vibrant digital lighting. Texture detail is up, as are the numbers of polys and on-screen baddies. It’s looking to be truly next-gen, unlike its predecesor which at times felt like a PS2 game running on an over-clocked machine. Enemies will display new behaviour patterns that change depending on how near they are to the player. At range, they won’t jostle about randomly but will dive for cover. When they get in close, this AI will shift to close-range mode, enabling them to work on you with new tricks that are dependant on how much they view you as a threat.

EDGE PREVIEW: Resistance 2 - It’s the US this time, so no religious outcries or gun cri… Oh, hold on

0 (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/NewsCom-125621.aspx?CT=1#Comments)
http://m.n4g.com/8/News/125000/125621_hs.jpg Edge writes: "Resistance: Fall Of Man was Insomniac’s first stab at making an FPS. Though it felt bold and confident, buoyed perhaps by the developer’s experience of producing riotously ballistic amusements in Ratchet And Clank, it failed to truly stand apart from games made by more practiced studios, the likes of Infinity Ward and Bungie, perhaps. And though its arsenal was inventive, its scenarios rarely demanded its mastery beyond headshots and melee.

What it did do was build sturdy foundations for a sequel. Resistance 2 (a working title) is set two years after the original’s unsuccessful defense of Britain, with the Chimera beginning a pincered air assault on the east and west coasts of America: the game once again puts you in the mutated shoes of Sergeant Nathan Hale, points you in the direction of some toothy foes, and says ‘get cracking’.

Insomniac has also offered hints about what it calls a ‘scalable AI system’ that will be used to manage the large numbers of enemies present onscreen at any one time. In essence, the enemies closest to the player will use coordinated attacks and clever dodging behavior, while those further away will follow slightly more basic modes of offence. As well as this AI system, there will also be a limited amount of randomised content in the game’s levels."

Ted Price Talks Resistance 2 (Προσοχή περιέχει κάποια μικρά spoilers)

Every few months Sony Australia holds an event in Sydney called Pause – essentially a chance to bring the local journos up to speed on the world of PlayStation and to give us all a chance to go hands-on with an array of titles. At the most recent event – held yesterday – one of the components of the presentation was a recording made for us by Ted Price, head of Insomniac, on Resistance 2 (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/142/14211237.html). While he didn't reveal many new details, it was an interesting insight into the thinking at Insomniac nonetheless, so we figured we'd jot down a few of the things he commented on.

First of all he mentioned that there was a "lack of unification" between the original Resistance's single and multiplayer modes, and that this will be addressed in the sequel. Not only will Resistance 2 have a far more unified design – both in gameplay terms and in aesthetics, settings and story, but Price views the game's eight player co-op – which is a separate set of levels from the single player game - as the perfect bridge between single player and multiplayer. He noted the difficulty of hopping straight into a huge multiplayer firefight, and pointed out that co-op would be the perfect way to learn how to operate as part of a team, without being thrown in the deep end. You can also expect Resistance 2 to be even more community focused than the original, with Price saying that most FPS communities are "anaemic".

Price also acknowledged that the opening sections of the first game were "weak" and that fans can expect Resistance 2 to begin with much more of a bang. The story will also be bigger and more thorough, according to Price, exploring who Hale is, and dealing with the transformations upon himself from his infection by the virus. The third person narrative is out too, with Hale firmly at the centre, hopefully making the game more immersive. In terms of the story, the events of Resistance 2 kick off right after the end of the original, with Hale landing in Iceland. It's not long, however, before he moves on to San Francisco and becomes a member of the Sentinels.

It seems most of the game will be set in America, with the Chimera hitting the U.S. on both the east and west coasts simultaneously. Price spoke a little about their vision of alternate history 1950s America – this ain't the clean cut, suburban stereotype from our world, but a bleak, desolate place that becomes even more so after the Chimera begin to decimate it. Cheery.

Price also revealed that further details of the 60 player online and eight player co-op would be revealed soon, so stay tuned!

Resistance: Fall of Man emerged in November 2006, as one of the few flagship titles for Sony's PlayStation 3. Its arrival corresponded with the launch of the PS3 and was regarded by many as an above-average action game and a worthy contribution to modern-day gaming. Even if it was characterized as a solid shooter, Resistance did not make an impact we expected and hasn't actually used the true potential of the PS3 hardware. Don't misunderstand, the game did look good, but not half as good as initially promised. It definitely falls behind the visual splendor of Xbox 360 smash hits such as Gears of War.

Excuse me, which way to the gents?
Still, that did not stop the game for getting mostly positive feedback from the public and journalists alike. Naturally, dev. studio Insomniac Games seized the opportunity to make a follow-up to the well-received action game. The team is revising several design approaches they had in the original and are also adding plenty of fresh elements to the gameplay. Innovations were promised for the multiplayer as well, but we'll get back to those.
Resistance 2 is, like its predecessor, a PS3-exclusive projected for a Fall release. SCEA is putting the game in the same boat with top franchises and upcoming releases such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. They also expect the game "to go toe-to-toe against" CliffyB's recently announced Xbox 360 action game, Gears of War 2.
There are two parallel storylines in the game. The main single-player campaign delves deeper into the story of Sgt. Nathan Hale, who was the central character in Resistance: Fall of Man. In addition, the co-op features an analogous plot to Nathan's tale, acting as sort of a bridge between the multiplayer and single-player.
As for Nathan, he has a new challenge ahead of him. In Resistance 2, the single-player storyline kicks off almost immediately after the conclusion of the original. Incidentally, the setting of the previous game introduces an alternated version of mankind's history, in which World War II never took place. Instead of fighting each other, humans faced a more serious threat. The first time around, Nathan's job was to defend Britain against a formidable alien force, referred to as the Chimera. Now, the Chimera are launching a full-scale invasion on the territory of the United States, attacking both the east and west coast simultaneously. As soon as Nathan returns to American soil, he meets up with a special defense force called the Sentinels. The Sentinels are, similarly to Nathan, immune to the devastating Chimeran virus.
Unlike the previous game, Resistance 2 deepens the story about Nathan. The focus of the plot is maintained on Nathan's character and his squad-mates, contrary to the original game where we witnessed a third-person narrative from a character named Captain Rachel Parker.
The developers aim to keep most of the core elements of the original, but they also mean to incorporate additional weapons, larger environments (to suit the game's new setting) and so on. Better AI is also on the agenda. This time around, enemy movement and behavior patterns are a lot more complex than before. For instance, enemies close by will perform more sophisticated attacks than those that are farther away. Of course, some enemies are more dangerous than others. Like in the first game, Resistance 2 sees the return of boss fights, except this time some of the bosses stand 150 feet tall and as such will definitely pose an even greater threat, as they destroy everything in their path.
The sequel also brings a new and mysterious third faction. For now they're simply calling them the Cloven. The Cloven were, in fact, featured in the first game as a skin choice in multiplayer, although they were never a part of the main story. According to Insomniac Games, that's about to change. Exactly how this new faction ties into the whole narrative remains to be seen.
The online co-op allows players to get into combat using one of the three available classes - which can be customized to suit the players' preference. There's the special-ops soldier who now wields a more accurate Bullseye rifle with an increased zoom option. Next to that, you can play with the heavy unit class, which uses a powerful chaingun to mow down foes. Each kill charges up a deployable shield, which can effectively protected for the entire squad. Last but not least is the medic class. Medics utilize the so-called Medicator gun. When fired accurately at enemies the Medicator gun charges up and uses that same power to fire healing rays on squad-mates.
Apart from the class-based system, the developers are highlighting randomly generated levels, allowing gamers to play matches differently each time. They also promised online battles that support up to 60 players.

Can't a guy mow the lawn in peace?
http://www.actiontrip.com/previews/ps3/pics/resistance24s.jpg (http://www.actiontrip.com/rei/scr.phtml?cat=p&platform=ps3&pic=resistance24)
You're in my way, four-eyes!
Resistance 2 includes larger environments, increased background detail, improved textures, additional polys on characters and enemies, as well as a wide range of visual perk ups. All of this, according to Insomniac, represents an effort to draw on the true powers of PS3's hardware, which wasn't fully exploited in Fall of Man. The original was in development before the PS3 console launched, but with Resistance 2 the developers claim to have gained more expertise needed to create far more appealing in-game atmosphere.
If we consider everything the developers revealed at this point, it doesn't seem like Resistance 2 is going to revolutionize gaming as we know it. It may even get lost in the shuffle and wind up to be nothing more than another mediocre shooter. (I highly doubt that as Insomniac has shown time and again that they can deliver a FUN gaming experience. And that's key. - 2Lions)
Of course, should Insomniac deliver on its promises, hopefully, a slightly different scenario will unfold. Resistance 2 could actually help improve the reputation of Sony's console in the eyes of console gamers, joining other highly anticipated PS3-exlusives such as Metal Gear Solid 4.

Too early to say if Resistance 2 will run at 1080p

Insomniac Games Community Manager won't rule out Full HD and 60 FPS.

Responding to questions on the official PlayStation Blog, Insomniac Games Community Relations Manager James Stevenson has refused to rule out the possibility of Resistance 2 running at 1080p video resolution and 60 frames per second.
"Way too early to say, this sort of thing happens around optimization," explained Stevenson.
It's good to see that Insomniac isn't ruling out anything at this stage, but it would still be a huge surprise to see the game hit stores supporting both 1080p and 60 FPS. We can certainly dream though.

Resistance 2: 60-player online in testing (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=186892)

The recently released trailer was far too short and snappy to satisfy any kind of craving for Resistance 2, we're promised more info this Thursday.

Advertisement:
Apparently, there's more to the trailer than a simple graphical cock tease. It contains hints at the game's intriguing new plot, which IG's James Stevenson says will be discussed in more detail later this week.

"The trailer discloses some new hints about R2 story direction that I won't spoil for you," said Stevenson, teasing that a pod cast on the official site will be published on April 17, with more info on both the trailer and the game.

He also talks about the current state of the game's development. "We've been working hard getting Resistance 2 ready for its fall release. Right now we're play-testing 60-player multiplayer and eight-player co-op daily, while tweaking sections of our single-player levels," he reveals.

"Needless to say, the game is rapidly progressing and every time we play there are new assets and tech going in," teases Stevenson, who refuses to reveal any specifics. "We're not quite ready to take the lid off the new stuff we're developing", he adds. "There's quite a lot!"

Resistance 2 Demo Coming Up (http://www.insomniacunion.com/news/resistance-2-demo-coming-up--8.html)

An Insomniac Games employee has written in the NeoGAF boards and confirmed that a Resistance 2 demo will be present during the Sony PlayStation day on May 6, two days from now. It is likely that impressions will leak out of the press-only event, and Insomniac Union will make sure to post them when they appear.

PlayStation Day: Resistance 2 Hands-on
Insomniac takes the war stateside. We give our thoughts. (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/871/871976p1.html)

First things first – Insomniac has everything to gain from being secretive about their baby right now; no need to stoke the fires too soon, given that it's not going to finish gestating for another six months. With that in mind, don't be too shocked to learn that this year's PlayStation Day in London only showed an early and fairly limited build of the multiplayer mode.

That said, what was shown holds a lot of potential – specifically, a full 60 players (well, 56 when I was playing) on one map playing over PSN; one group in London, and the other in Los Angeles. There was no lag, given it was playing over a dedicated server, but it was impressive more in how the game demonstrated how it intends to handle this number of players at once without dissolving into a chaotic fray.

This is done through creating smaller, objective-based battles within the larger context of the battle. Groups of up to eight are given micro-objectives (kill target X, get to point A and so on). Meeting these nets experience points, which we'll delve into further below.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/871/871976/resistance-2-20080506030644975.jpg

The map itself was set in northern California in the redwood forests. Dappled, warm afternoon light streamed through the needles and leaves of the foliage as the dense and hilly surrounds teemed with staff players. Stone buildings and massive woodchipping facilities dot the area. Overall, even in its unfinished state, the engine was clearly a large step forward from the first game; textures were noticeably sharper, colours brighter and enemy models also looked slightly improved.

The UI, including end of round menus and on-screen counters, were all temporary at this stage. Motion controls were not present, but the developer indicated there would be motion controls in the final game, assuming it continued to add to the experiene, rather than feel tacked on.

In practice, there were plenty of opportunities for testing out the selected weapons – the shotgun and machine gun from the first game, plus the new minigun – a chaingun with a slight wind-up and wind-down. It's secondary function acts as a standalone turret pod with a built-in V-shaped shield on the front. This is activated by holding down R2 for a few moments.

The other, more mysterious weapon had no official name at this stage, but was essentially a powerful distance rifle with an as-yet unannounced secondary attack that was turned off for the preview session. As we all know, Insomniac love their weapons, and Ted Price believed firmly that this was his favourite weapon in the game. We'll have to take his word for it on that one.

The revamped experience points system now better rewards players for teamwork and skill too – a running tally of points is awarded for each bullet that you plant in your enemy. These experience points go towards a variety of things – some temporary, like a speed boost or berserker rage. Others however, are more persistent – through CEO Ted Price was reluctant to delve into that. We'd guess you can eventually use experience points to unlock new costumes and minor permanent stat improvements.

All of this is tied to a more social and involved Resistance website that plans to go far beyond the current multiplayer social site, myresistance.net. Price believes the key to great multiplayer rests on playing with people you enjoy socialising with, so it's natural that Insomniac is looking at ways of matchmaking based on personal interests and hobbies, in addition age, location and sex.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/871/871976/resistance-2-20080506030644225.jpg

Controls, from what we could gather, were largely the same as in the first game. An auto-aim was present while we were playing, and the developer demonstrating the game insisted that the controls were looser than they should be in the final game, but I didn't feel any particular difference. Resistance veterans should be able to jump straight in without too much hassle. With plenty of ideas up their sleeves, the team is also making game balance a big priority, to ensure that new players have no trouble getting a feel for the combat – without getting completely spanked over and over again.

In all, given this was merely a small slice of a much larger game, I'm quite impressed with how solid Resistance 2's multiplayer is looking. Provided the final game makes provisions for out-and-out chaos of 60 players as well as the more organised, divided teams, I think they're onto something very original and undeniably fun. Roll on, release.

Resistance 2 Multiplayer Hands-on απο το IGN.

Sony's surest bet for this year has to be Resistance 2. The game is the follow-up to the system's (far and away) best launch title, and it's coming from Insomniac, which has proven itself to be an extremely reliable card in Sony's deck. The game was on display a couple weeks ago over in London, but we had the chance to check it out stateside today.

As was the case a couple weeks ago, Insomniac is only showing off multiplayer, and only on one stage. While we would have loved to have gotten a glimpse at the single-player aspect, we're pretty much already sold on the multiplayer thanks to its rather inventive squad system

As the game supports 60 players, letting everyone run around with no real goal other than to kill each other would quickly devolve the game into chaos. To counter this, Insomniac has instituted squads and a series of goals for each of them. You're automatically placed into a squad at the start of a game, and you'll quickly be given an objective. It might be to defend a certain point, for instance. The cool thing is that your squad will have a rival squad throughout the game, and said rival will always get the opposite goal as you. So, if you're defending a point, it'll be the other squad that's attacking it.

While that's cool, the system works well because of how objectives change mid-game to keep things fresh. So while you might need to attack or defend a point for a bit, you'll eventually be moved somewhere else, perhaps to help a troubled squad. Should your team have a hard time completing a goal or you find yourself being slaughtered by the other team, the game will assign another squad as back-up to your objective. That team will of course bring its rival squad with it, but the skirmish should be evened out a little more.

Even though Insomniac still has a ways to go, all of this worked very well in our time with the game. Though the server was packed, it always felt like the game was very focused and that we knew what we should be doing at all times. The system also worked well in changing up the number of people we were fighting, as some battles would only put us against a half-dozen other troops, while another objective that had us providing back-up would have us fighting amongst two dozen folks in a tight spot.

Another cool aspect to Resistance 2 that we were able to check out is its new rewards system. For every bullet that you land, or for every objective that your team completes, you're awarded some battle points. Once you have enough of these, you'll be rewarded with a small boost to your stats. This might be more health, quicker movement or perhaps even accuracy. It's a small boost, but it's enough to make a difference and keep you on a roll. While this sounds like it'll reward the best players and punish the worst, these bonuses only last until you die, and then you have to start over. Not only that, but once you've gotten an upgrade, a giant multiplier will appear above your head to let your opponents know that you're worth more points as a kill now. So while you may have slightly more health, everyone will be gunning for you.

Besides slight stat boosts, one cool thing that you'll earn is some sort of Berserker bonus (the name on that is pending). Right now your only available bonus is a shield that'll wrap around you as a half-bubble and make you pretty much invulnerable from enemy fire for a good 30 seconds or so. It's similar to the energy shield in Halo 3, except that this shield sticks with you and follows you wherever you go. Insomniac promises that this won't be the only bonus in the game, but it was all that we had to play within the demo build.

What we've played of the game was really fun, and it appears that Insomniac has done a great job of keeping everything focused while maintaining 60 players at once. It sounds like E3 may be our first chance to see the single-player portion of the game, and given how good the online is at this point, we can't wait.

Ted Price Talks Resistance 2, We Go Hands on With Multiplayer (http://kotaku.com/5009520/ted-price-talks-resistance-2-we-go-hands-on-with-multiplayer)

Multiplayer bedlam got you down? Endless cross-map sniping bumming you out?

Ted Price feels your pain and he's doing his best to fix some of things that often plague the best of multiplayer shooter matches.

He has to, Resistance 2 online play will support up to 60 players on one map, and without some way of sorting through some of those problems the matches just wouldn't be any fun to play.

If you really don't care about the confusion of such a mighty match, if you revel in the disorder, you can still play the matches you want, but for the rest of us Price and his team has some pretty neat ideas.

As he announced in Europe, Resistance 2 will feature a multiplayer mode that breaks those 60 gamers into smaller squads. While the matches I saw and played through featured ten squads of six, Price said that other size squads will also be used in the game.

While the members of the squad don't have to stick together, they do spawn together and it pays to stick to your group. Once spawned the game's AI looks at the larger battle taking place on the map and issues automatic orders to your and your squad, marking your new objective on the map with a star in a circle.

Objectives can include taking a control point, defending an area, even coming to the rescue of another squad under heavy fire or taking out one particular member of an opposing squad.

The game automatically matches you up with an enemy squad, making sure to give the two opposing forces the same sorts of orders so they're always fighting one another. The AI also does it's best to make sure that when possible your objectives and the objectives of other squads in the larger army aren't near one another, so team mates will be more inclined to stick together and follow orders.

A player can decide to just run around the map attacking other enemy squads, but an in-game point system awards far more points for doing what you're told and for getting kills on that squad matched to you. And not only do those points let you get in-game buffs of sorts like a shield, but they're also used to help permanently rank up your character outside the game.

There are some other really neat tweaks to squad play as well. For instance the enemy squad your team is taking on will be marked to make them more identifiable. (In the build I played they were tinted red, but Price says that something more subtle will be implemented by launch.) Those enemy players who are doing well will be marked with a large red star over their head. The longer they are on a kill spree, the more successful they are, more points someone will get for killing them. This bounty-like system can award up to four times the normal number of points for taking out these skilled players and will likely go a long way to help balance the game for new players and make it more challenging for skilled gamers.

I'm a long-time fan of first-person shooters, and like many of my ilk, can get a little touchy when someone starts messing with the formula, but playing through a couple of matches on one of the game's enormous maps populated with 60 gamers made me a believer.

The spawn locations, the use of orders, the tight-knit squad system, all made me feel as if I was playing a much smaller, more manageable match, more importantly it made me feel as if my effort meant something, instead of it being lost in a frenzied 60 person free-for-all.

While I loved the system, I think it's just as important that Price and his team aren't forcing people to use it. Not only can you choose to play traditional matches in the game, with 60 people on board, you can also just ignore what you're asking to do in the squad play and go-it alone. Player choice is an important factor in shooters, guiding players to make smart tactical decisions is a great thing, but not forcing them to do so is even better.

While the version of the game was missing a bit of polish and quite a bit of features, I was still impressed with how far Resistance multiplayer has come since the first title hit. Visually, the game seems a bit grittier, and the play more fluid.

Price wasn't showing off the single player campaign at last week's event or the eight-player co-op, but what I did see of the title left me both impressed and eager to see more.

Insomniac Games’ James Stevenson has revealed details on two new weapons set to debut in the company’s forthcoming PlayStation 3 sequel, Resistance 2.

Speaking in an interview with 1up.com, Stevenson confirmed one of the weapons as the “Marksman”, while also providing further details on the previously announced “Minigun.”

According to Stevenson, the Marksman functions as semi-automatic, mid-range sniper rifle, touted to sport the same stopping power as that of the L23 Fareye.

Meanwhile, he also detailed the secondary abilities available for the Minigun, revealing that players will be able to deploy a tripod and shield. Although unable to move, gamers will be able to apply accurate and concentrated fire upon the enemy in this position whilst being protected from frontal attacks.
However, the user will still be susceptible to enemy snipers and attacks from the rear.
Resistance 2 is due out exclusively on PS3 later this year.

Resistance 2 (http://www.gameplayer.com.au/Home/PREVIEWS/PREVIEWGAME/tabid/1484/Default.aspx?CID=1bf51d1a-653a-4ff6-8966-3cb69a33ed22)

How will 30-on-30 firefights work? The lead designer tells all…

We had a chance recently to catch up with Colin Munson, lead designer of Resistance 2. It’s Sony’s big blockbuster FPS for the latter half of the year, and he was keen to show us exactly how his game will slaughter the competition.

On paper, it’s an impressive upgrade of the PS3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man — but the stand-out stat is the sheer size of the multi-player battles. Up to 60 combatants will be able to slug it out at once. That’s 30 on 30. That’s epic. Or at least, it could be epic. It could also be a complete shit-fight. So how has Insomniac made it work? How does it come together? As Munson explained, it’s all about dividing the rival armies into squads:

“I’m Squad A, you’re Squad B; you’re my rival squad. Squads consist of five players. We’re on a larger team of 30 — 30 on 30.

“But you and me? We’re rivals. So what’ll happen is, say, we’ll get a competing objective. For example, Take The Lumber Yard, right? The map we’re showing is Scotia, so it’s kinda appropriate. I’ll get the objective ‘attack the lumber mill!’ — you’ll get the objective ‘defend the lumber mill.’

There is no chaos; the dynamic objective system keeps players at each others’ throats, right down to the last man. Resistance 2 will even notice if you suck, and adjust the objectives on the fly to compensate.

“Let’s say you’ve played before, you know what you’re doing, you have a pretty good defence. Your squad has worked together, and can communicate, so you have a pretty good defence. I’m a new guy, I try to attack, but I’m not able to break through your defences and complete the objective. So our dynamic objective system kinda ‘sees’ that, ‘sees’ that I’m not doing very well at all, and will send reinforcements.

“So another friendly squad will be sent to reinforce me. But that friendly squad will come with its own rival squad. So my rival squad will be reinforced as well. So now we have two squads against two squads, competing for the same objective.” So no, Resistance 2 will not be a shit fight — unless you count the flak you’ll cop if you keep leaning on friendly squads for aid.

“So that kinda illustrates a little picture of how the dynamic objectives work, and how squads kind of work. The objectives can create this larger battle, but I always know what to do. I always have my objective, I always have my rival squad. So that chaos that is normally encountered in a first-person shooter multi-player game is never there. It’s completely eliminated. You know exactly what to do, you know who to kill, and everything contributes to your team score — how well your team is doing.”

Note that these multi-player levels will be huge — around a kilometre to a side. In theory, you could ignore your squad objectives and roam around killing whoever you wish. Sensible gamers won’t do that, however, because they’ll miss out on all the points and power-ups. “If I kill you, I’m gonna get 300 points for it. At that 300-point mark, I’m gonna get maybe a little extra health. Or a little extra speed. So I get these little incremental increases, so the next kill that I get is a little easier, right?

“So it develops this kind of momentum. This supports the squad-on-rival-squad [gameplay dynamic] because as a rival squad, you’re worth twice as many points as a normal guy.”

Yes, Resistance 2 will teach you prejudice. You’ll also learn to watch your back: “As I create this little momentum here, getting points, I’m getting a little bit more powerful, but I am worth more points to you, because now you’re gonna see a little ‘2X,’ and a little ‘3X,’ and a little ‘4X’ above me.”

“The basic idea is, the better I do, the more stat increases I get. BUT, the more I’m worth to my rival.

“It all comes together when we put the squads, the objectives, and the points, all in the same mix. You get much more points for completing objectives that you do for killing a guy. So I would get, say, 200 points for killing a guy, but I’d get 1000 points for completing an objective. So that means I’d get a lot of incremental stat increases, but it also means I’m a more attractive target.”

Be sure to watch this space for part two of the interview, in which Munson tells us about the upcoming beta test, how the game pushes the PS3’s graphics to the limit, and exactly why it has the potential to kick Gear of

New Resistance 2 weapon revealed! (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8753325&publicUserId=5443146)

Check it out: The mo-cap minigun! This surprisingly heavy prop can mow down packs of invisible Chimera in a matter of seconds. But you must be careful when wielding this firearm on a make-believe battlefield; improper use can lead to one helluva nasty splinter.

Joking aside, last month I went to San Diego to attend some of the Resistance 2 mo-cap sessions. Sony has a pretty swank set-up for this kind of stuff. See that video screen above my shoulder? That projects whatever the actors are doing, plus displays it using the actual in-game model. So if the actor is told to pretend that he's a Hybrid and simulate tearing apart a U.S. soldier, everyone can watch it play out on the big screen and instantly get an idea of whether it'll work for the game. Very cool.

Insomniac's Kevin Grow (far right) instructs our "Sentinels" on Sony's mo-cap stage. These guys have balls...and they glow, too!

I'm actually headed back to San Diego next week with my fellow Insomniac Paul Featherstone to check out a li'l more mo-cap. I wonder what it'll take to get me into one of those spandex suits....

Back on the battlefield
After being quite busy with "other stuff," I finally returned to our weekly R2 multiplayer sessions. I gotta say--the Marksman currently holds the top spot on my R2 weapons list. Now, this newcomer doesn't have the range of the Fareye (naturally), but it's great for those who enjoy staying on the periphery and racking up kills. I also took James' advice and spent more time firing the Auger; I'm really digging the new ability to see enemies through walls while zooming.

In other multiplayer news, it's also nice to see the Chimera skins make their way into this mode. The only downside: The excuse of "I thought that guy was on my side" doesn't work anymore.

And Here's Your Top 10
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, the house of Insomniac routinely puts together "Top 10" lists.
Here's one that came together this week:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3119/2537036192_7248d27d33.jpg?v=0

Expect to see more lists (that are suitable to print) in the weeks and months ahead.

Until next time,

--Bryan

Καθόλου loading times στο Resistance 2

Speaking in a live interview on Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=145245), Insomniac boss Ted Price has revealed that you’re not going to see a single loading screen in upcoming shooter Resistance 2, all thanks to tech improvements made since the release of the first game.

“We do have streaming of textures and other assets now,” said Price. “Not only does this improve the overall look but it cuts down on load times. In fact, you shouldn’t notice any loading screens in R2. We’ve also added a lot more tech-wise - detail maps, new lighting system, new effects system, better normal mapping, better specular response, redone shaders and lots of behind-the-scenes stuff that makes the game really stand out aesthetically.”

He added: “You’ll see bigger ‘levels’ or ‘chapters’ this time around. And hopefully you won’t see any loading screens. At least that’s the plan!”

Ted’s still going, so get over there and ask him a question. See if you can find out what colour his pants are.

Resistance 2 Gameplay Footage Preview (http://www.insomniacunion.com/news/resistance-2-gameplay-footage-preview--25.html)

On the 11th of April 2008, Insomniac Games released the first glimpse of Resistance 2 on Gametrailers TV. The footage disclosed Nathan Hales voice, his bleak future and America overrun by Chimera. Since the video was only a teaser, it contained no actual gameplay footage. It teased even more though, as it ended with a promise of gameplay footage on Friday the 13th of June.

While some footage was leaked from the Sony Playstation Day, there hasnt been any official footage of Resistance 2s gameplay shown to the public yet and hype has gradually been building over the coming months as Resistance 2 is shaping up to be a game of colossal proportions. Insomniac Games themselves have declined to comment about which aspect the of gameplay the video will focus on, but since the Sony Playstation Day was purely focussed on the multiplayer aspect, perhaps they will decide to focus on other aspects instead? The recent screenshots that were released focussed on one of the story arcs (whether it be single player, or co-op), so perhaps more light will be shed on this area of the game.

Spike TV have announced that the video will be a whopping 7 minute long, and this will be a massive service to fans of the first game who will be looking to analyse the video and see whats in store for their next adventure with Nathan Hale. Whether the video will contain purely gameplay footage remains to be seen, but there can be no doubt that the footage shown will be both visually stunning and highly entertaining.

It is very likely that the recently announced new weapons - the Marksman and Mini-gun - will also get a full on showcase throughout the video, and we may well see the new and improved Auger, which is now said to have a much improved fire-rate and the ability to allow the user to see through walls.

Other than that, Insomniac may feel the need to disclose a bit more about the story, or perhaps reveal a bit more about the co-op story, which we know will not be the same as the single player story.

Should they decide to focus on online multiplayer, they could chose to reveal some more information about the kinds of objectives players might be set, as well as seeing how the different classes will come into play during the mini skirmishes that will be taking place in the huge 60 man arenas.

One thing that is pretty much guaranteed though, is that we will see some of the new Chimera that have been announced. will appear in the game. We already saw one new type in the screenshots that were released, but after seeing what they came up with in Resistance: Fall of Man, its going to be great to see what they have lined up this time.

Short summary:

- Ted Price said Insomniac is doing a lot more with the story this time around. Hale not only fights the Chimera, he has internal issues to solve.

- The story will be told from Hale's prespective.

- Nathan Hale knows he has 19 hours left to live, but Ted Price did not reveal if he himself predicted it. When asked if someone else told him, he couldn't tell.

- The biggest boss in the game is 300 feet tall (91.44 meters). There are a lot of big bosses throughout the game.

- Chigaco in the game has been overrun by Chimera and is abandoned for a few years now, so it has a "ghost town" look.

- New enemy in Resistance is is the Grims, a half converted Chimera. They do not use a weapon, as they are a melee enemy.

- When we see the Chigaco sequence Hale doesn't have a lot of time to live, so the battles there are going to be a bit wild.

- The game starts where Resistance 1 left off, but we actually begin the journy in London, where we see the opening cinematic of Nathan Hale. The story then jumps two years after the Chimera invasion began.

- The game is mostly set in the U.S., but we will get to see other locations as well. Ted Price said we will see Chimera architecture.

- We don't actually play as Nathan Hale in the co-op mode, but other characters. Up to eight people will be able to go through a unique adventure. There is a class system:

Medic - Responsible for healing.

Special Ops - Damage control.

Soldier - Responsible for the main fighting.

- The co-op mode will be played in the Red Woods, United States. It's a location that provides contrast from the urban location.

- There is crossover between the SP and Co-op stories.

- Insomniac Games have been running 60 player games for a while now, and Ted Price said it's feeling good.

- The multiplayer mode features a "Dynamic Objective System" that's giving the squad you join a specific objective to accomplish.

- The battles are spread widely as not all 60 people are going into the same direction shooting people, what Insomniac Games did made sure all the squads get different objectives, and those objectives keep you in different parts of the map.

- The multiplayer mode will not feature any map from the SP, Insomniac actually design unique MP maps. We will see the American structures in the background, but in a "twisted way", Ted Price says.

- We will be able to play with fewer people in the multiplayer.

- We will see the Chimera.

- Resistance 2 is a lot more realistic from the first game.

- Another new enemy is the 'Kamilian', who can actually make himself totally invisible. One hit from this enemy will kill you.

- Every level in Resistance 2 will feature different enemies.

- Weapons - The XR-005 Hailstorm will not be coming back because the team needed room for more weapons. Resistance 2 features a two weapon system.

- There are no vehicles in multiplayer mode.

- Rachel Parker and Hale will not enter a romnatic relationship throughout Resistance 2. In fact, Parker will not be in Resistance 2 at all because she's back in England.

- GameTrailers will show the world premiere trailer of Resistance 2 right before E3. The trailer might answer some of the questions we are all asking.
